missioned January 6, 1776; 1st major, commis-
sioned January 22, 1776, resigned December 18,
1776, to run for elective office; major, Anne
Arundel County Militia, appointed 1794. WEALTH
DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: inherited
one slave from his mother, 1773; his wife received
an unspecified number of slaves from her father
before 1784; assessed value £816.13.4, including
12 slaves, 10 oz. plate, 1783; charged with five
slaves, 1798. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: possibly
at least 36 acres in Anne Arundel County (in-
herited from father). Tillard also held at least 300
acres in Anne Arundel County on mortgages.

ELECTION AND DEATH: assessed for 507 acres Anne
Arundel County, 1783; Janet inherited 105 acres
Prince George's County from her father, 1784;
repatented 311 acres in Anne Arundel County in
1787 for a net gain of ca. 150 acres; purchased 2
tracts totalling ca. 400 acres in Anne Arundel
County in 1791 and 1796 (both tracts had prob-
ably been mortgaged to Tillard prior to the sales);
assessed for 655 acres in Anne Arundel County,
1798; had sold at least 150 acres by 1803 and
purchased ca. 300 acres in 1806, all in Anne Arun-
del County. It is possible that in 1783 and 1798
Tillard was paying taxes on land mortgaged to
him as well as on his own property. WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED: in December 1806; buried on De-
cember 15, 1806, in St. James' Parish, Anne
Arundel County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV,
£3,563.18.3 current money (including 17 slaves,
books valued at $22.00, 63 oz. plate, and temple
spectacles); FB, estate overpaid £52.11.5 current
money, with most of debt to Wallace, Johnson
& Muir still outstanding. LAND: at least 569 acres
in Anne Arundel County, which was sold in 1827
to pay the debt to Wallace, Johnson & Muir.

tha, daughter of John Baynard (?-1705), of Tal-
bot County, and wife Elizabeth. BROTHER: Bay-
nard (?-1774), who married in 1748 Margaret
Chairs. SISTER: Mary (?-1769), who married first,
in 1746, Nathan Wright, Jr. (?-1758), and sec-
ond, by 1764, Samuel Rowland of Lewistown,

Sussex County, Delaware. MARRIED in 1742 Sarah
(?-ca. 1774), widow of both Edward Chetham
(?-1736), of Queen Anne's County, and James
Earle, Jr. (ca. 1694-1739). Sarah was the daugh-
ter of John Crapp, of Philadelphia, and his wife
Susanne Berd. CHILDREN. SONS: John, who mar-
ried Elizabeth Baynard; William (?-1778). STEP-
SONS: Edward Chetham, who married Rachel Til-
lotson; James Chetham; and Joseph Earle (1739-
1777). DAUGHTER: Sarah. STEPDAUGHTERS:
Hannah Chetham, who married Edward Clayton;
Susannah Chetham. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCA-
TION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: probably
a Quaker during minority, as his parents be-
longed to the Third Haven Monthly Meeting of
Friends, Queen Anne's County Meeting House;
married in St. Luke's Parish, Queen Anne's
County, and served as a vestryman; in 1767 he
was referred to as "one of the people called

his father, 100 acres purchased, and 224 acres
acquired through his marriage), plus control of
an additional 1,150 acres in Queen Anne's County
