(1737-1768), who married in 1764 Charles (1740-
1769), son of Charles Goldsborough (1707-1767);
Margaret (1744-1779), who married Richard
(1746/47-1805), son of Matthew Tilghman (1717/
18-1790); Henrietta Maria (1749-1787); and Mary
(1753-?), who married Edward Roberts of Tal-

1754 and sold off all except 66 acres of it over
the next ten years; acquired an additional 412
acres in Talbot County by 1756; sold 140 acres in
Queen Anne's County by 1758; bought 150 acres
in Talbot County by 1761 and 84 acres in Queen
Anne's County by 1763; charged with 2,218 acres
and 1 lot in Ogletown, Queen Anne's County, in
1769, and 700 acres in Talbot County in 1772.

WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated On OctO-

ber 31, 1782, in Talbot County. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, at least £4,539.3.1 current money

(including 68 slaves and books). His estate was
charged with 108 oz. plate, 1783. LAND: probably
at least 2,800 acres in Queen Anne's and Talbot
counties.

TILGHMAN, WILLIAM (1756-1827). BORN: on
August 12, 1756, in Talbot County; fourth son.
NATIVE: fourth generation. RESIDED: in Talbot
County until 1764; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
1764-ca. 1777; Chestertown, Kent County, ca.
1777-1793; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ca. 1793-
death. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: James
Tilghman (1716-1793), son of Richard Tilghman
(1672/73-1738/39). MOTHER: Ann (1727-?),
daughter of Tench Francis (1701-1758). UNCLES:
William Tilghman (1711-1782); Edward Tilghman
(1713-1785); and Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-
1790). AUNTS: Mary Tilghman (1702-ca. 1736),
who married James Earle, Jr. (ca. 1694-1739);
Henrietta Maria Tilghman (1707-1771), who
married first, George Robins (1697-1742), and
second, William Goldsborough (1709-1760); and
Anna Maria Tilghman (1709-1763), who married
first, William Hemsley (1703-1736), and second,
Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-1770). BROTHERS: Tench
(1744-1786); Richard (1746-1 796) James Tilgh-
man, Jr. (ca. 1748-1796); Philemon (1760-1797);
and Thomas Ringgold (1765-1789). SISTERS: Anna
Maria (?-1817), who married William Hemsley
(1736/37-1812); Henrietta Maria (1763-1796);
