GROUND. FATHER: James Tilghman (1716-1793),
son of Richard Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39)
MOTHER: Ann (1727-?), daughter of Tench Fran-
cis (1701-1758). UNCLES: William Tilghman (1711-
1782); Edward Tilghman (1713-1785); and Mat-
thew Tilghman (1717/18-1790). AUNTS: Mary
Tilghman (1702-ca. 1736), who married James
Earle, Jr. (ca. 1694-1739); Henrietta Maria
Tilghman (1707-1771), who married first, George
Robins (1697-1742), and second, William Golds-
borough (1709-1760); and Anna Maria Tilghman
(1709-1763), who married first, William Hemsley
(1703-1736), and second, Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-

CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. SOCIAL STATUS AND

ACTIVITIES: Esq., by 1791. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: probably planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Talbot County,
1787-1788 (Claims 1, 2), 1788, 1789 (Claims),
1790 (elected, but did not attend), 1791-1792.

LOCAL OFFICE: associate justice, 2nd District, Tal-
bot County, appointed January 17, 1791. WEALTH

DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: 6 slaves,

1790; bequeathed 2 slaves and £1,000.0.0 in gold
or silver coin by his father, 1793. ADDITIONAL
COMMENT: Tilghman had begun borrowing money
by 1791 and continued to borrow heavily until his
death. Most of his loans were for under £100.0.0,
but a few were for over £500.0.0; his creditors
numbered over 100. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: no
evidence of land owned in his own name; prob-
ably managing the land in Talbot County later
devised to him by his father. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES

IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH:

inherited probably 1,300 acres in Talbot County
from his father, 1793; purchased 634 acres in Tal-
bot County, 1793-1795. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
on November 24, 1796, in Talbot County. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, at least £3,619.7.8 cur-
rent money (including 27 slaves, 99 oz. plate, and
books). LAND: 1,983 acres in Talbot County. AD-
DITIONAL COMMENT: Tilghman's personal estate
was insufficient to cover his extensive debts, which
with interest totaled over £4,419.0.0 current money
in 1801. As a result of a Chancery Court case
instituted by his creditors in 1799, Tilghman's real
property was sold for £5,905.9.4.

TILGHMAN, MATTHEW (1717/18-1790). BORN:
on February 17, 1717/18, at the "Hermitage,"
Queen Anne's County; youngest son. NATIVE:
third generation. RESIDED: at "Rich Neck," near
Claiborne, District 1, Talbot County, by 1733-
death. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Richard
Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39). ADDITIONAL COM-
MENT: At the age of 15 Matthew went to live with
his cousin Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca. 1676-1741)
and his aunt, Margaret Lloyd Ward (1683-1747).
MOTHER: Anna Maria (1677-1748), daughter of
Philemon Lloyd (1646-1685). UNCLES: Edward
Lloyd (1670-1718/19); Philemon Lloyd (ca. 1674-
1732/33); and James Lloyd (1679/80-1723). AUNTS:
Rebecca Tilghman (?-1725), who married Simon
Wilmer (ca. 1656-1699); Margaret Lloyd (1683-
1747), who married Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca.
1676-1741). BROTHERS: Philemon (1704-died
young); Richard (1705-1766); William Tilghman
(1711-1782); Edward Tilghman (1713-1785); and
James Tilghman (1716-1793). SISTERS: Mary
(1702-ca. 1736), who married James Earle, Jr.
(ca. 1694-1739); Henrietta Maria (1707-1771),
