ably employee of Cloberry & Co.; planter by 1638;
Indian trader, 1640; attorney, 1642. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Assembly, present
1637/38, Kent Isle, 1641/42 (Aggrievances), 1642A
(Accounts; Laws). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Kent
County, 1642; commissioner, Kent County, ap-
pointed 1642. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES:

declared an enemy of the province in 1644/45 for
joining with Claiborne in a revolt against the pro-
prietary government. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.

LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 1,430 acres. SIGNIFI-

LATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Cecil County, 1749
(election of county delegation voided on June 6,
1749, when the Lower House judged that the
election was not free). LOCAL OFFICES: North Sas-
safras Parish Vestry, Cecil County, elected 1726,
1728, 1729; justice, Cecil County, 1720-1751
(quorum, 1733-1751); justice, Court of Oyer,
Terminer, and Gaol Delivery, Cecil County, ap-
pointed 1749, 1750, and 1752; coroner, Cecil
County, in office 1715-1717, 1719, 1721, 1723,
1726-1727, and 1740; ranger, Cecil County, ap-
pointed April 25, 1735. MILITARY SERVICE, cap-

(ca. 1604-?). BORN. ca. 1604. IMMIGRATED, by
1647, as a free adult from Virginia. RESIDED: in
St. Mary's County; returned permanently to Vir-
ginia in 1651. CHILDREN. SON: probably Thomas
(?-ca. 1703), who married Catherine. PRIVATE

CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. SOCIAL STATUS AND

ACTIVITIES: settled in Virginia by 1616; lived in
the Elizabeth City area in the 1620s and 1630s;
Gent., by 1647; patented 700 acres in Northum-
berland County, Virginia, in 1651. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Assembly, present 1647/48, St.
Mary's County, 1649. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE
ISSUES: opposed the proprietary government dur-
ing the mid-1640s; in 1647/48 Leonard Calvert
pardoned Thornborough and confirmed to him
any property held in Maryland.
