DAUGHTER: Elizabeth (1710-1746), who married
on January 23, 1734/35, William Goldsborough

(1709-1760). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: lit-

erate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, St. Pe-
ter's Parish, Talbot County. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1695/96; Gent., by 1699. The
Robins family were wealthy merchant-planters
during the 18th century. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
planter; probably merchant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-
ISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Talbot County,
1708A, 1708B-1711, 1712-1714 (Laws 1, 3, 4),
1715 (Laws), 1716-1718 (Laws 1-3). LOCAL OF-
FICES: justice, Talbot County, 1695/96-1721
(quorum, 1701-1721); St. Peter's Parish Vestry,
Talbot County, in office 1709, 1718, 1719. MILI-
TARY SERVICE: major, 1717. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 1,213 acres in Tal-
bot, Dorchester and Queen Anne's counties (1,100
acres by inheritance from father and probably
from his brothers, 100 acres through his second
marriage, and 100 acres by purchase). SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: purchased 1,114 acres between
1710 and 1720 in Talbot and Queen Anne coun-
ties; sold a lot in Oxford, Talbot County. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: on December 29, 1721, in St.
Peter's Parish, Talbot County. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, £1,429.12.11 current money (includ-
ing 8 servants, 16 slaves, a significant inventory
of cloth, leather goods, and shoes); FB, £1,077.2.0
current money. LAND: 2,327 acres in Talbot, Dor-
chester, and Queen Anne's counties, plus a house
and lot in Oxford, Talbot County.

ROBINS, THOMAS (ca. 1702-1766). BORN: ca.
1702. NATIVE: second generation. RESIDED: in
Worcester County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
Thomas Robins (1677-by 1731) of Somerset
County, the son of Col. John Robins of "Salt
Grove," Accomack County, Virginia, who was a
member of the Virginia House of Burgesses.
MOTHER: Elizabeth (1683-?), daughter of Pierre
Bowdoin, a Huguenot immigrant. BROTHERS:
John; James; and Bowdoin. SISTERS: Mary; Eliz-
abeth; Esther; and Susannah. OTHER KINSHIP: His
great-grandfather was Col. Obedience Robins (?-
1662), of Northampton County, Virginia. An il-
lustrious Virginia pioneer. Obedience Robins
served as first commander of the Eastern Shore
for that colony and as a member of the House of
Burgesses. MARRIED first, ca. 1737, Leah Whaley
(Whalley, Wale, Waley), daughter of Elias Whaley
of "South Point," Somerset County, and his wife
Sarah Peale. MARRIED second, Arralantar Purnell

(?-by 1782), daughter of John Purnell (?-1755)
and his wife Elizabeth Rackliffe (?-ca. 1754).
Arralantar was the granddaughter of Thomas Pur-
nell (?-1723). Her brothers were Zadock Purnell
(?-1805); William Purnell (?-1777), a possible
legislator; Thomas Purnell, of John (?-1796); and
Capt. John (?-ca. 1761). Her sisters were Eliz-
abeth; Zipporah; and Levina. Her first cousins
were Thomas Purnell, of Thomas (?-1790); Wil-
liam Purnell (1739-1796), a possible legislator.
Her nephew was William Purnell (?-1798). Her
niece was Ann Purnell, who married first, Henry
Dennis (?-1785), and second, William Polk (1752-
1812). CHILDREN. SONS: Thomas (1740-1776), who
married in 1768 Isabel McClenahan; John Purnell
Robins (ca. 1742-1780); Littleton; and Bowdoin
(?-by 1786). DAUGHTERS: Mary (1743-1809), who
married William Purnell (1739-1796), a possible
legislator; Andasia, who married (first name un-
known) Spence; Esther; Arralantar (?-1825), who
married John Selby Purnell (?-1799); and Eliz-
abeth. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RE-
LIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: probably planter. PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Worcester
County, 1744 (elected to the 2nd session of the
1742-1744 Assembly to represent the newly
formed county), 1745/46-1748, 1749-1751. MIL-
ITARY SERVICE: called captain by 1749. WEALTH

DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 625

acres in Worcester County (375 acres through
first marriage and 250 acres by purchase), plus
unknown acreage in Virginia inherited from his
father. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN

FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: purchased 1,813 acres

between 1748 and 1765, patented 1,746 acres be-
tween 1743 and 1764, and acquired 430 acres
through his second marriage, all in Worcester
County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED, between De-
cember 3, 1765, and June 20, 1766; will probated
in Worcester County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV,
at least £2,237.6.2 (including 47 slaves and a grist-
mill and sawmill). LAND: 4,117 acres in Worcester
County, plus an unknown amount in Virginia.

ROBOTHAM, GEORGE (?-1698). BORN: in
England. IMMIGRATED: by 1669, as a free adult
from England. RESIDED: in Calvert and Dor-
chester counties; in Talbot County, probably by

1674. FAMILY BACKGROUND. SISTERS: Anne, who

married (first name unknown) Wilson, of Darby,
England; Mary, who married (first name un-
known) Keeling, of Stafford County, England.
