Katherine Ceely (?-1698), who was transported
to Maryland in 1659. She subsequently married
Henry Constable (?-1696). CHILDREN. SONS: James
(?-1700), who married Elizabeth, daughter of
Nathan Smith (?-1684) and wife Margaret Bur-
rage, stepdaughter of Thomas Tench (?-1708);
John (?-1700), who married Elizabeth, daughter
of Richard Galloway. DAUGHTERS: Mary (?-ca.
1691), who married John Ceely (Keely) (?-1691);
Elizabeth (?-by 1698). PRIVATE CAREER. EDU-
CATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Quaker;
devised £4.0.0 for Friends in need. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: immigrated as servant to
Richard Bennett (ca. 1639-1667), free by 1659

Anne Arundel County, 1676-1678 (died before
the 3rd session of the 1676-1682 Assembly).
STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: sentenced to
six months in prison for refusing to take con-
stable's oath, 1660/61; provided in will for man-
umission of one slave. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.

AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on July 10, 1681,
in Anne Arundel County. PERSONAL PROPERTY:

bacco); FB, 92,805 pounds of tobacco. Legacies

RINGGOLD, JACOB (1753-1816). BORN on
February 14, 1753, as recorded in the St. Paul's
Parish Register, in Kent County. NATIVE: sixth
generation. RESIDED: on Kent Island, Queen
Anne's County, until his second marriage ca. 1800;
thereafter maintained recorded residences both
on Kent Island and in Baltimore County. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: William Ringgold, of East-
ern Neck (1729-1808). MOTHER: Sarah Jones (?-
ca. 1754). STEPMOTHER: Sarah, widow of Richard
Johnson (?-ca. 1754). HALF BROTHERS: Dr. Wil-
liam (?-1812); Peregrine. SISTERS: Mary (1751-
?); Rebecca. HALF SISTERS: Sarah; Elizabeth;
Hester; Frances; Ann; Araminta; and Henrietta.
MARRIED first, by 1774, Ann (1755-by 1791), only
child of Samuel Wright (?-ca. 1767) of Kent Is-
land, Queen Anne County. MARRIED second, by
1791, Rebecca (?-by 1818), daughter of Benja-
min Kirby. Her brothers were Dr. Benjamin (?-
ca. 1784), of Fell's Point, Baltimore Town; Nich-
olas (?-1800), of Baltimore Town; William; and

Joshua, a merchant of Baltimore Town. Her sis-
ters were Margery, who married Jonathan Har-
rison; Elizabeth, who married Edmond Custis;
Litillar; and Sarah. CHILDREN. SONS: Samuel W.
(?-1845); Peregrine; William (?-by 1845); James;
and Richard, who moved to Alabama by 1849.

PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS

AFFILIATION: Anglican; Christ Church, Kent Is-
land, Queen Anne's County. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: Gent., by 1774; Esq., by 1784. OC-

ably planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERV-
ICE: Lower House, Queen Anne's County, 1779-

Burton (?-1672), daughter of Robert Vaughan
(1597-by 1668/69). HALF BROTHERS: William
(1677-1754); John; James; (?-1704/5); and
Charles. SISTER or HALF SISTER: Barbara, who
married (first name unknown) Lanham. STEPSIS-
TER: Rebecca Burton. MARRIED first, Sarah (?-
