REEDER (READER), JOHN, JR. (ca. 1732-1780)
BORN: ca. 1732, in St. Mary's County. NATIVE:
fourth generation. RESIDED: in St. Mary's County.
FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Thomas Reeder (by
1715-1773). MOTHER: Susannah (1711-1771).
BROTHERS: Henry (?-ca. 1787), a physician;
Thomas Attaway (1741-1806). SISTERS: Draden;
Elizabeth Attaway; Elizabeth; and Henrietta.
MARRIED first, Dicandia, daughter of Charles
Somerset Smith (1698-1738/39) of Charles County.
Smith married twice. Dicandia's mother was either
Jane, daughter of Thomas Crabb (?-1719/20), or
Margaret, daughter of William Smith. Her broth-
ers or half brothers were Richard (1733-1759)
and Charles Somerset Smith (1733-1781), twins.
Her sisters or half sisters were Jane, who married
(first name unknown) Forbes; Ann, who married
Samuel Parran (1717-?); Mary; Elizabeth, who
married first, Francis Wilkinson, Jr. (?-by 1738),
and second, Young Parran (1711-1772). Her
nephew was Richard Parran (?-ca. 1782). MAR-
RIED second, Catherine. She subsequently mar-
ried by 1784 Nathaniel Ewing. CHILDREN. DAUGH-
TER: Susannah, who married first, Dr. John
Ireland, and second, Dr. Gustavus Brown (1751-

1801). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RE-

LIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STATUS
AND ACTIVITIES: Esq., by 1772. OCCUPATIONAL

PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, St. Mary's County, 1756-
1757 (elected to the 4th session of the 1754-1757
Assembly), 1757-1758, 1771, 1773-1774 (Griev-
ances 2, 3); Conventions, St. Mary's County, 4th,
1775, 5th, 1775, 6th-8th, 1775-1776. LOCAL OF-
FICES: All Faith Parish Vestry, St. Mary's County,
1763-1765, 1775, 1779; justice, St. Mary's County,
1764-at least 1777 (quorum, 1773-at least 1775);
justice, Court of Oyer, Terminer, and Gaol De-
livery, St. Mary's County, commissioned 1772;
trustee for the poor, St. Mary's County, 1773;

married Margaret (1698-1795), daughter of
Richard Robins and wife Lydia; John (1705-1777);
and (name unknown). SISTERS: Ann, who mar-
ried (first name unknown) Davis; Elizabeth, who
married (first name unknown) Allston. MARRIED
ca. 1730 Susannah (1711-1771), whose last name
was probably Graves. CHILDREN. SONS: John
Reeder, Jr. (ca. 1732-1780); Thomas Attaway
(1741-1806), who married Catherine Vemere; and
