County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Mr., by
1723; Gent., by 1738. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
probably planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, St. Mary's County, 1722-
1724, 1732-1734, 1734/35-1737, 1738 (Arms and
Ammunition), 1739-1741 (Arms and Ammuni-
tion, Cv). LOCAL OFFICES: All Faith Parish Ves-
try, St. Mary's County, 1715-1718, 1723-1726,
1730- 1731/32, 1736- 1739; churchwarden, All Faith
Parish, St. Mary's County, 1745; justice, St. Mary's
County, in office by March 1722/23-at least 1739
(quorum by 1728-at least 1739). STANDS ON PUB-
LIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: expressed strong anti-Cath-
olic sentiments in his will. WEALTH DURING LIFE-

Mary's County (350 acres of "Orchard Neck" in-
herited from his father, 350 acres through mar-
riage). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES BETWEEN FIRST

ELECTION AND DEATH Probably inherited the re-
mainder of "Orchard Neck," 350 acres, from his
brother in 1739; sold 350 acres of "Hebden's Hole"
in 1757. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED, will probated
March 9, 1770, in St. Mary's County. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: TEV, £796.16.11 (including 8 slaves
plus 2 slaves and personalty given as legacies and
not appraised); FB, £782.11.8. LAND, probably
700 acres in St. Mary's County. IDENTIFICATION
PROBLEMS. There is a possibility of a missed gen-
eration, given John Read's advanced age and the
absence of public service after 1741. However,
there is no other record of probate for a John
Read other than a John Read, Jr. who died by
April 1740. This date would preclude attributing
to him the legislative service from the 2nd and
3rd session of the Assembly of 1739-1741.

READ, JOHN HATTON (1746-ca. 1781). BORN:
on October 16, 1746, in St. Mary's County; sec-
ond of three sons. NATIVE: fourth generation. RE-
SIDED: in St, Mary's County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Philip Read (?-1758) of St.
Mary's County, son of John Read (?-1770) and
wife Hannah Clarke. MOTHER: Ann, the widow
of William Read (?-1739), Gent., of St. Mary's
County. BROTHERS: Cane (1743-?); Philip (1751-
ca. 1793), who married Eleanor Walbert. HALF
SISTER OR SISTER. Mary Ann Read, of age by
1759, who married (first name unknown) Bowl-
ing. OTHER KINSHIP: great-grandfather, Philip
Clarke (?-1699). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION:
literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, St.
Andrew's Parish, St. Mary's County. SOCIAL STA-

TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1775. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: probably planter. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Lower House, St.
Mary's County, 1777, 1777-1778, 1779-1780
(Manufactories 1, 2). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, St.
Mary's County, commissioned 1773, 1778, 1779,
and 1780; justice, Orphans' Court, St. Mary's
County, 1779-1781; St. Andrew's Parish Vestry,
St. Mary's County, 1775-1779; Committee of

DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: 1 slave,

acres from his grandfather John Read (?-1770).
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: by April 1781, probably
in St. Mary's County; size of estate unknown.

REED, PHILIP (1760-1829). BORN: in 1760 near
Chestertown, Kent County. NATIVE: at least sec-
ond generation. RESIDED: at "Huntingfield," his
farm near Chestertown. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: possibly Joseph Reed. MARRIED after 1790
Mary, daughter of Marmaduke Medford (?-1798)
of Kent County. Her brothers were George, Jr.
(?-1816), died insolvent, who married Elizabeth
Lathim; Marmaduke; and Joseph, a minor in 1798.
Her sisters were Elizabeth, who married Kennard
Blackiston (?-by 1816); Hannah. CHILDREN. SONS:
Philip M., a justice of the peace, Kent County,
1835; George C. DAUGHTER. Jane Elizabeth. PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: completed prepara-
tory studies. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican;
Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, at least in 1791.
SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES. Gent., by 1788;
Esq., by 1798; original member of the Society of
the Cincinnati. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: farmer;
officeholder. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERV-
ICE: Lower House, Kent County, 1787-1788, 1788.

OTHER STATE OFFICE: Executive Council, 1805-

1806, 1806 (resigned on December 20, 1806). LO-
CAL OFFICES: sheriff, Kent County, 1791-at least
1799; associate justice, 2nd District, Kent County,
1794-at least 1816; Chester Parish Vestry, Kent
County, ca. 1800-ca. 1811. MILITARY SERVICE:
captain, militia, 1776-1777; captain of infantry,
Maryland Line, 1781; lieutenant colonel, militia,
1812; lieutenant colonel and commandant, First
Regiment, Maryland Militia, 1814, and as such
led the troops that defeated the British in the
Battle of Caulk's Field; made a brigadier general,
Maryland Militia, in recognition of his service in
the War of 1812. OUT OF STATE SERVICE: senator,
