CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,

Dorchester County, 1716-1718. LOCAL OFFICE:
justice, Dorchester County, in office 1706-1707,
1709, 1726-at least 1734 (quorum, 1729-at least
1734). MILITARY SERVICE, captain, by 1728; ma-
jor, by 1740. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT

FIRST ELECTION: 785 acres in Dorchester County
(588 acres inherited from father; 100 acres through
marriage; 97 acres by patent). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND

DEATH: added 109 acres through a resurvey of
the 588 acres he had inherited from his father,
Dorchester County, 1718; patented 250 acres in
Dorchester County between 1736 and 1741; pur-
chased 50 acres in Dorchester County, 1740; con-
veyed by deed of gift 100 acres in Dorchester
County to his grandson, 1742; sold 26 acres in

POPE, NATHANIEL (?-1660). IMMIGRATED: by
1637/38, as a free adult. RESIDED: on ''Pope's
Freehold," St. Mary's County; moved to Virginia
by 1654. MARRIED Luce (Lucy). CHILDREN. SONS:
Thomas (?-1685), who married Joanna; Nathan-
iel, who married Mary Sisson. DAUGHTERS: Anne,
who married by 1658 John Washington; Mar-
garet, who married William Hardwick. PRIVATE

CAREER. EDUCATION: illiterate. RELIGIOUS AFFIL-
IATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVI-
TIES: Mr., by 1646/47; Gent., by 1648/49; pat-
ented l00 acres, 1639/40; enjoyed rapid economic
mobility during the decade he spent in Maryland;
by 1648 had transported his wife and 5 servants;
during the period of Ingle's Rebellion, went to
Appomatox, Virginia, returned by 1646/47; set-
tled permanently in Virginia by 1654. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: possibly steward for Leonard
Calvert (ca. 1606-1647) during the early 1640s;
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Assembly, present 1637/38, 1641/42 (Aggriev-
ances), St. Mary's Hundred, St. Mary's County,
1642A (Accounts; possibly Laws). MILITARY
SERVICE: lt. colonel, Westmorland Troops (Vir-
ginia), commissioned 1655. OUT OF COLONY SERV-
ICE: justice, Northumberland County, Virginia,
sitting 1652, Westmorland County, Virginia, sit-
ting 1655 (probably served 1653-ca. 1660). STANDS
ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: entrusted by Gov.
Calvert with the task of pacifying Kent Island,

ably as a free adult. RESIDED, in St. Clement's
Hundred, St. Mary's County. MARRIED Elizabeth,
who was transported ca. 1643 as an indentured
servant. She subsequently married John Belayne.

of Virginia; Dr. John Pott, governor of Virginia,
1628. MARRIED first, by 1655, Elizabeth. MARRIED
second, Hannah. Hannah Pott subsequently mar-
ried Richard Edwards. CHILDREN. SON: John.
DAUGHTER: Bridget, who married Daniel Cun-
ningham. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION. Protestant. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: probably the John Pott, Jr.,
who was transported to Virginia in 1653 by Capt.
Francis Pott and was called "of Golden Quarter,
Virginia" (the home of Francis Pott) in 1655; Mr.,
by 1655. OCCUPATION AL PROFILE, planter. PUBLIC
CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Parliamentary
Commission, 1655-1657/58. OTHER PROVINCIAL
OFFICE: justice. Provincial Court, 1655-1657/58.
LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Patuxent County (Calvert
County), 1655-1657/58. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: at least 400 acres.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on July 4,

1676, in Calvert County. PERSONAL PROPERTY:
TEV, 13,090 pounds of tobacco (including silver
valued at 100 pounds of tobacco and 290 acres of
land sold to pay debts, which was valued at 7,000
