Esther (Hester), who married first, Nehemiah
King, second, Charles H. Winder (?-1804), son
of William Winder, Jr. (?-1808), and third, Alex-
ander Stuart, all of Somerset County; Gertrude,
who married in 1799 Gen. William Henry Winder
(1775-1824), son of William Winder, Jr. (?-1808);
Ann Fromentin, who married first, (first name
unknown) Walker, and second, by 1833, Herschel
Vespasian Johnson (1812-1880), who was gov-
ernor of Georgia (1853-1857), vice-presidential
nominee on ticket with Stephen A. Douglas in
1860, and a confederate senator from 1862 to
1865. STEPDAUGHTER: Margaret Winder Handy,
who married John Whittington Rounds. ADDI-
TIONAL COMMENT: His son James (1792-1868)
was probably from his marriage to his second wife
Ann, while his daughter Ann Fromentin was
probably born after 1800 to his third wife Mary.
All of his other children were from his first mar-

the original election of the county delegation was

attend; in 1802 the Senate elected a member to
fill his vacancy, although no letter of resignation
was noted). OTHER STATE OFFICES: chief justice,
4th Judicial District, 1802-1812; judge, Court of
Appeals, 1806-1812. LOCAL OFFICE: trustee,
Washington Academy, Somerset County, 1779-
