County, 1666. LOCAL OFFICES: constable, Kent
County, 1658; sheriff, Kent County, 1666-1667;
justice, Kent County, 1660/61-1666, 1667-1668.
STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: subscribed oath
of loyalty to government of Parliamentary com-
missioners, 1652. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND

AT FIRST ELECTION: 200 acres in Kent County.

WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: by May 19, 1668. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, at least 8,830 pounds of
tobacco, but size of the entire estate unknown.
LAND: 200 acres in Kent County.

PICKETT (PECKETT), WILLIAM (?-1710)
IMMIGRATED: by 1685, probably as a free adult.
RESIDED: in Kent County; in Baltimore County
by 1699 to death. MARRIED first, (name un-
known). MARRIED second, Elizabeth, who sub-
sequently married John Taylor (?-by 1737). CHIL-
DREN. SONS: William, who married Sarah;
Heathcote, who married by 1728 Mary; and
George. DAUGHTERS: Mary, who married by 1709
Charles Miles; Temperance, who married in 1710
William Low; and Elizabeth, who probably mar-
ried Benjamin Jones. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCA-
TION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION. Protes-
tant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., at

death; sons held no known public offices. OC-
CUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; attorney, admit-
ted to the following courts: Kent County, before
August 1690; Cecil County, August 1690; Balti-
more County, by August 1692. PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Baltimore
County, 1708A. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION: at least 206 acres purchased
in Baltimore County between 1701 and 1707, and
possibly 50 acres in Kent County purchased in

1685/86. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between June

10 and July 16, 1710, in Baltimore County. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £154.15.4 (including at
least 1 oz. plate and a library of 51 books), plus
debts due the estate of 56,945 pounds of tobacco;
FB, £128.12.0 and 4,718 pounds of tobacco be-
fore payment of legacies and distribution of es-
tate. LAND: probably 256 acres in Baltimore
County, plus possibly 50 acres in Kent County.

PILE, JOHN (?-ca. 1675/76). IMMIGRATED: by
1643/44, as a free adult with wife. RESIDED, in St.
Mary's County. MARRIED Sarah. CHILDREN. SON:
Joseph Pile (?-1692), who married Mary, daugh-
ter of Thomas Turner (?-ca. 1662/63). DAUGH-
TERS: Anne (?-by 1676); Mary (?-by 1676). PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS

AFFILIATION: Catholic. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: reached agreement with proprietor in
1642 to immigrate with partner, Benjamin Gill;
Mr., 1643; Gent., 1648; called John Jarbo (1619-
1674/75) "brother" in 1651. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: planter; merchant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE. Assembly, special writ 1649;
Upper House 1650-1650/51 (did not attend).
OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICES. Council, 1648-1652;
justice, Provincial Court, 1648-1652. STANDS ON
PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: fidelity to the proprietor
brought Pile the gift of the manor of "Sorum,"
a total of 1,000 acres, in 1658 and 1662. WEALTH

(?-by 1676). MARRIED Mary, daughter of Thomas
Turner (?-ca. 1662/63). CHILDREN. SON: Joseph
(by 1691-1724), who married Elizabeth Parn-
ham. DAUGHTERS: Sarah, who married Nicholas
Power; Mary, who married, William (1654-1720),
son of William Boreman (ca. 1630-1709); Ann,
who married in 1701 Luke Gardiner; and Eliza-
beth, who married in 1706 James Neale, Jr. PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS
AFFILIATION: Catholic. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: second generation provincial office-
holder. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC

Mary's County, 1686-1688 (Accounts 2). LOCAL
OFFICES: justice, St. Mary's County, 1675/76-1689
(quorum, 1685-1689); town officer, Newport, St.
Mary's County, 1686. MILITARY SERVICE: cap-
tain, by 1688. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES:
a strong proprietary supporter who opposed the
Protestant Associators' Revolution in 1689.

inherited £39.6.8 sterling from his father, 1676. LAND
