PAR BIOGRAPHIES

acres in Calvert, Charles, and Baltimore counties,
plus 1 lot in Benedict, Charles County, and a lease
(for three lives) on 35 acres of manor land in
Charles County (ca. 1,100 acres, 1 lot in Benedict,
and the lease obtained by purchase and patent).
As steward for eleven proprietary manors in
Charles and St. Mary's counties, Parran received
ca. 1,100 acres rent free, 1752-at least 1768. SIG-
NIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: ceased stewardship sometime
after 1768. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: Parran's obit-
uary appeared in the Maryland Gazette on Jan-
uary 9, 1772. His will was probated on April 7,
1772, in Calvert County. PERSONAL PROPERTY:
TEV, at least £3,413.6.3 current money (includ-
ing 84 slaves, plate, 13 beds, and a library of
books). LAND: ca. 3,000 acres in Calvert, Charles,
Baltimore counties, 1 lot in Benedict, and a lease
on 35 acres in Charles County.

PARROTT, WILLIAM (?-1669). IMMIGRATED:
by 1654, as a free adult with his family, probably
from Virginia. RESIDED, in Calvert County; in
Talbot County by 1659, of "Tredhaven in Chop-
tank River" at death. MARRIED Ann, possibly the
sister of Isaac Abraham (?-1675) of Talbot County.
CHILDREN. SONS: William, who married in 1669
Sarah Morgaine; Henry, who married in 1683 Mary
Bates; George, who married in 1677 Elizabeth
Badwell; and Benjamin, who married in 1680
Elizabeth Keen. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION
literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Quaker, prob-
ably affiliated with Third Haven Monthly Meet-
ing, Talbot County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVI-
TIES: high status and appointment to provincial
office immediately upon arrival; close association
with other dissenting Protestants who came from
Virginia. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE planter. PUB-
LIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Parliamentary
Commission, by December 1654-1657/58. OTHER
PROVINCIAL OFFICE: justice, Provincial Court, at
Patuxent, 1654-1657/58. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRI-
VATE ISSUES: petitioned the Provincial Court in
1675 for "reparation in his credit," accusing his
maidservant of slander, because she had claimed
he had occasionally beaten her with a "great stick"
while correcting her. The case was dismissed be-
cause there appeared "noe cause of action."

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-
TION: no evidence of land ownership. SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: patented 650 acres in 1658 in
Calvert and St. Mary's counties and 600 acres in
1659 in Calvert and Talbot counties; purchased

2,050 acres in 1666 and 1667 in Talbot and Dor-
chester counties. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED, will
probated on May 11, 1669, in Talbot County.
PERSONAL PROPERTY. TEV, 31,408 pounds of to-
bacco (including 5 servants); FB, 26,580 pounds
of tobacco. LAND: ca. 2,950 acres in Talbot and
Calvert counties, plus a "house and land" at Ox-
ford, Talbot County.

PARRY, JOHN (?-1719). IMMIGRATED/NATIVE:
unknown. RESIDED: in Charles County by 1710.
After his death Parry was described as having
lived at "The Cypress House" at the head of Budds
Creek. MARRIED Dorothy, daughter of Cornelius
White, Gent., of Charles County. Her sister was
Rebeckah, who married Luke Barber. Dorothy
subsequently married on April 14, 1720, Robert
Hanson (ca. 1680-1748). CHILDREN. SON. Thomas,
of Bath Easton in Somersetshire, England, by
1737. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: probably lit-
erate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION. Protestant. SO-
CIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., by 1710. OC-
CUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter-attorney; described
as a factor, 1710. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, Charles County, 1719
(Laws 1; died before the 2nd session of the 1719-
1721/22 Assembly). LOCAL OFFICES, justice,
Charles County, by 1715-1719 (quorum, by 1718-
1719); justice, Court of Oyer, Terminer, and Gaol
Delivery, Charles County, commissioned 1718.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-

TION: 325 acres in Charles County (200 acres by
purchase). WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED, testamentary
bond granted November 11, 1719, in Charles

County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £509.13.1

oz. plate, and books); FB, £397.2.1. LAND: 325
acres in Charles County.

PATISON (PATTISON), ARCHIBALD (?-1791)
BORN, probably in Scotland. IMMIGRATED: prob-
ably, if so probably from Scotland. RESIDED: in
Cambridge, Dorchester County, by 1768. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. BROTHER: John, of Edinburgh,
Scotland. MARRIED in 1770 Mary, widow of Levin
Stevens (?-1770), daughter of Thomas Wing (?-
ca. 1751) of Dorchester County, and wife Sarah.
Mary was the stepdaughter of Joseph Scott;
granddaughter of Capt. Robert Wing (?-ca. 1741),
of Dorchester County, mariner, and wife Ann;
and stepgranddaughter of John Stewart. CHIL-
DREN. DAUGHTER: Mary. STEPDAUGHTER: Sarah
Stevens. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STA-
