PARRAN, RICHARD (?-ca. 1782). BORN in
Calvert County. NATIVE, third generation. RE-
SIDED: on the plantation he inherited from his
father known as "Preston," Calvert County. FAM-
ILY BACKGROUND. FATHER. Young Parran (1711-
1772). MOTHER: Elizabeth Smith Wilkinson. AUNT
OR HALF AUNT: Dicandia Smith, who married John
Reeder, Jr. (ca. 1732-1780). BROTHERS: John
(1752-1822); Alexander (1757-1805); and Charles
Somerset. STEPBROTHER: Francis Wilkinson. SIS-
TERS: Mary (1742-1744); Jane; and Elizabeth.
STEPSISTER: Ann Wilkinson. MARRIED Sarah.
CHILDREN. DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth S., who mar-
ried John, son of William Fitzhugh (ca. 1722-
1798); Sarah (?-by 1819), who married Thomas
Gunn; and Mary (?-by 1819), who married Charles

County, elected 1773; justice, Calvert County,
1773-ca. 1782; justice, Orphans' Court, Calvert
County, 1777-ca. 1782; commissioner of the tax,
Calvert County, appointed 1778. MILITARY SERV-
ICE: captain, Calvert County Battalion of Militia,
commissioned April 16, 1778. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 1,000 acres

in Charles and Calvert counties (all inherited from
father). WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: ca. 1782. On
January 7, 1782, Parran was commissioned a jus-
tice for Calvert County. Sometime after this date
a clerk noted "dead" beside his name. He is not
mentioned in the 1782 assessment for Calvert

County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: Size of estate un-

known; in 1782 his widow was assessed for
£1,134.17.6, including 39 slaves and 50 oz. plate.
In 1784 she petitioned the House of Delegates to
pass an act empowering her to sell part of the
real estate that had belonged to her husband so
that his debts could be paid. In 1785 such an act
was passed. LAND: ca. 1,000 acres in Charles and
Calvert counties.

PARRAN, YOUNG (1711-1772). BORN: on Oc-
tober 5, 1711, in Calvert County. NATIVE: second

generation. RESIDED, in Calvert County, 1711-
1741; Charles County, 1741-1747; Calvert County,
1747-1772. At his death, Parran lived on a 900-
acre plantation called "Preston, Preston's Ne-
glect, and Desert," located on the north side of
the Patuxent River between Point Patience and
St. Leonard's Creek. He purchased this tract in

1748. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Alexander

Parran (1677-1729). MOTHER. Mary, daughter of
Arthur Young. BROTHERS: Moses (1713-1740):
Samuel (1717-?); Benjamin (1719-by 1761); and
Phillip (1724-by 1770). HALF BROTHERS: John
(1702-by 1743); Alexander (1704-1704); and
Alexander, Jr. (1707-1765). SISTERS: Ann (1715-
?); Mary (1722-?); Elizabeth (1726-?); and Sarah
(1729-?). HALF SISTERS: Mary (1699-?); Jane
(1706-?). HALF NEPHEW: Nathaniel (?-1760), who
married Ann Wilkinson, who subsequently mar-
ried Ignatius Taylor (?-1807). MARRIED by 1748
Elizabeth, widow of Francis Wilkinson, Jr. (?-
1739). She was the daughter of Capt. Charles
Somerset Smith (1698-ca. 1738/39) of Calvert
County and wife Jane Crabb; stepdaughter of
Margaret, whose father was William Smith. Eliz-
abeth's half brothers were Richard (1733-1759)
and Charles Somerset (1733-1781), who were
twins. Her sisters or half sisters were Jane, who
married (first name unknown) Forbes; Ann, who
married Samuel Parran (1717-?); Mary; and Di-
candia, who married John Reeder, Jr. (ca. 1732-
1780). CHILDREN. SONS: Richard Parran (?-ca.
1782); John (1752-1822), who married Ann
Bourne (1758-?); Alexander (1757-1805), who
married in 1778 Mary King (1761-1815); and
Charles Somerset, who married in 1782 Margaret
Ireland. STEPSON: Francis Wilkinson. DAUGH-
TERS. Mary (1742-1744); Jane; and Elizabeth.

STEPDAUGHTER: Ann Wilkinson. PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
Mr. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; manor
steward for Lord Baltimore, 1752-at least 1768.

ran received ca. £18.0.0 sterling per annum, his
commission as steward for eleven proprietary
manors in Charles and St. Mary's counties, 1752-
