EWS: Aquila Paca (1738- 1788); William Paca (1740-
1799). NIECE: Frances Paca (?-ca. 1787), who
married Richard Dallam (1743-1820). MARRIED
first, by April 1725, Frances (ca. 1705-by 1731),
daughter of John Stokes (?-1732), Gent., of Bal-
timore County and wife Susanna Maria. Frances
was the granddaughter of George Wells (?-1696).
She was the niece of Frances Wells (?-1713),
who married Thomas Frisby (1681-ca. 1715/16).
Her brothers were John (1707-?); Humphrey
Wells (1709-?); and George (?-1741), who mar-
ried Suzanna (1718-1806), daughter of James
Phillips (?-1720). Her sister was Mary (1712-?).
MARRIED second, between November 15, 1731,
and June 23, 1732, Rachel (1703-1746), widow
of both Edward Scott (?-1725) and John Brown;
daughter of William Blay (ca. 1681-1716) and
wife Isabella. Rachel was the stepdaughter of John
Johnson. She was the granddaughter of William
Pearce (ca. 1641-1720/21). She was the niece of
Daniel Pearce (1677-1727); Elizabeth Pearce, who
married Henry Ward (?-1734). Her brothers were
Edward (1707-?); William (1714-?). Her sisters
were Catherine; Isabella. Her first cousins were
Margaret Ward (1716-?), who married Benjamin
Pearce (1711/12-1756); Benjamin Pearce (1711/
12-1756). CHILDREN. SONS: John (1725-1757), who
married in 1752 Margaret Lee; Aquila Francis (?-
died young). STEPSONS: John Scott (1725-?);
Peregrine Browne, of Kent County. DAUGHTER.
Martha (1732/33-?), who married Robert Adair
(?-1768). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Although his father was
a Quaker and requested in his will that his chil-
dren be brought up as Quakers, Aquila became
an Anglican. The births of two of his children and
his own death are registered in St. George's Par-
ish, Baltimore County. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: Gent., by 1725. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE, planter; also owned a small store at death.

PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Lower

House, Baltimore County, 1741 (elected to the
3rd session of the 1739-1741 Assembly), 1742
(Accounts 1; died before the 2nd session of the
1742-1744 Assembly). LOCAL OFFICES: justice,
Baltimore County, 1733/34-1743 (quorum, 1736-
1743); St. George's Parish Vestry, Baltimore
County, 1730-1733. MILITARY SERVICE: captain,
by March 1736/37; major at death. WEALTH DUR-
ING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: received as a
gift from his father-in-law, John Stokes, 6 slaves,
livestock, and furniture, 1725; gave 4 slaves to

his sons to be delivered after his death, 1732.
Loaned money to the minister of St. George's
Parish, ca. 1741-1742, in return for the minister's
allotment of 40 pounds of tobacco per poll, 1741-

1747. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: at least 3,350 acres

in Baltimore and Kent counties (ca. 1,380 acres
in Baltimore County inherited from father; 393
acres in Kent County remaining from 1,216 acres
acquired through second marriage; 400 acres in
Baltimore County as a gift from his father-in-law,
John Stokes, and entailed to Frances's children;
845 acres in Baltimore County by purchase; 323
acres in Baltimore County by patent and re-
survey) . SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN

FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: Prior to death, and
possibly prior to first election, aquired 100 acres
by purchase, 150 acres from his sister Susannah
Galloway, and probably a share of 940 acres de-
vised to his deceased brother James by their father;
all lands in Baltimore County. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: on February 8, 1743/44, in Baltimore County.
PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £313.18.7 sterling,
£2,037.17.9 current money, 1,064 pounds trash
tobacco, and 91,261 pounds tobacco (including
29 slaves, 1 white servant, 41 oz. plate, new goods
imported in 1744, and goods in the store valued
at over £307.0.0 current money); FB, £296.19.0
sterling and £1,564.7.2 current money. LAND:
probably at least 3,600 acres in Baltimore and
Kent counties.

PACA, AQUILA (1738-1788). BORN: on June 21,
1738, in St. John's Parish, Baltimore County; elder
son. NATIVE: fourth generation. RESIDED: on Bush
River, near Abingdon, Baltimore (later became
Harford) County until 1779; Annapolis, Anne
Arundel County, 1779 until 1786; Abingdon,
Harford County, 1787-death. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: John Paca (ca. 1712-1785), son
of Aquila Paca (ca. 1676-1721). MOTHER. Eliz-
abeth Smith (?-ca. 1766). UNCLES: Aquila Paca
(ca. 1703-1743/44); William Smith (?-1777).
BROTHER: William Paca (1740-1799). SISTERS.
Mary (1733-?); Elizabeth (1742-1758); Martha
(1743/44-1829), who married James Phillips (?-
ca. 1800); Susannah; and Frances (?-ca. 1787),
who married Richard Dallam (1743-1820). FIRST
COUSIN: Martha Paca (1732/33-?), who married
Robert Adair (?-1768). MARRIED first, on Decem-
ber 8, 1763, Elizabeth (1745-1771), daughter of
Thomas Franklin (ca. 1706-1787) and wife Ruth
Hammond Ingram. Elizabeth was the grand-
daughter of Charles Hammond (ca. 1670-1713).
She was the niece of Philip Hammond (1697-1760)
