in Baltimore Town, 1785-1787; divided several
small tracts with his brother Thomas for a net loss
of 19 acres, Baltimore County, 1786; sold 119
acres in Frederick County, 1787; patented a 892-
acre tract in Baltimore County and immediately
sold 487 acres of it, 1787; bought title to 2 lots in
Baltimore Town previously leased and leased out
1 lot in six small parcels, 1788; bought 22 acres
in Frederick County and 441 acres in Baltimore
County, 1788; resurveyed and patented 7 tracts
for a net gain of 259 acres in Baltimore County
and 173 acres in Frederick County, 1790; pur-
chased title to the 286-acre "Green Spring Punch"
in Baltimore County from his mother in 1790, but
gave her a life estate in the property; bought 1,895
acres in Baltimore and Frederick counties, with
Stephen Winchester, in 1791, and 257 acres in
Baltimore County, 1792; sold 385 acres in Bal-
timore County, 1791-1792; acquired control of
the entire 1,895-acre tract from Winchester in
1793 and promptly sold 475 acres of it, Baltimore
and Frederick counties; sold 69 acres in Baltimore
County and 1 lot in Baltimore Town, 1793; bought
50 acres in Baltimore County and another lot in
Baltimore Town, 1793; bought 84 acres in Bal-
timore County, 1794; sold part of his wife's lot
in Baltimore Town and surrendered his lease on
another lot in Baltimore Town, 1794; sold 156
acres in Baltimore County, 1 lot in Baltimore
Town, and leased out another lot in Baltimore
Town, 1795; resurveyed and patented a tract in
Baltimore County for a net gain of 200 acres,
1796; sold at least 224 acres in Baltimore County
shortly before his death; probably sold the re-
maining 10,822 acres in Frederick County before
1798; purchased land along the Ohio River and
in Pennsylvania sometime before his death.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between May 7 and June
25, 1803, in Baltimore County. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, $51,954.34 (including 24 slaves, 248
oz. plate, 177 chocolate pans, saw mills, grist mills,
coopers' houses and shops, warehouses in Bal-
timore City, and bank stock); FB, $49,846.25.
LAND: at least 5,200 acres in Baltimore County;
2 lots in fee simple and 11 lots leased in Baltimore
City; land on the Ohio River.

PACA, AQUILA (ca. 1676-1721). BORN: ca. 1676,
in Anne Arundel County; only son of father. NA-
TIVE, second generation. RESIDED: in Baltimore
County by 1694. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER.
Robert Paca (?-1681), who was in Maryland by
1660. MOTHER: Mary (ca. 1632-1699), widow of

John Hall (?-by 1660). daughter of William Par-
ker (?-1673/74). AUNT: Sarah Parker, who man-
ned John Edmundson (?-1697/98). HALF BROTHER:
John Hall (ca. 1658-1737). MARRIED on Septem-
ber 11, 1699, Martha (?-1746), daughter of James
Phillips (?-1689) and wife Susannah (?-1708),
stepdaughter of Dr. Benjamin Arnold (Arnall).
Her brothers were James Phillips (?-1720); An-
thony (?-1698). Her sister was Mary (?-1738),
who married first, John Carvile (ca. 1670-1709),
and second, Richard Smithers (Smothers) (?-
1731). CHILDREN. SONS: Aquila Paca (ca. 1703-
1743/44); James; and John Paca (ca. 1712-1785).
DAUGHTERS: (first name unknown) (?-1709); Mary
(1701-?), who married Samuel Chew (1693-1749)
of Anne Arundel County; Susannah (1705-by
1743), who married in 1722 Joseph Galloway of
Anne Arundel County; and Priscilla (?-ca. 1742),
who married in 1740 Winston Smith (?-ca. 1752).

PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS

AFFILIATION: Anglican until at least 1708/9, but
became a Quaker by 1714. His wife and children
were Quakers. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
listed as a taxable in the household of his half
brother in Baltimore County in 1694. Paca retired
from public life ca. 1714, presumably shortly after
his conversion to Quakerism. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, Baltimore County, 1708B-
1711. LOCAL OFFICES: sheriff, Baltimore County,
1703-1706; justice, Baltimore County, 1707-1714.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-

TION: at least 1,800 acres in Baltimore County
(ca. 1,600 acres by patent and 200 acres through
marriage). He acquired at least 2,500 acres in
Baltimore County by patent, 1705-1719. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on November 10,
1721, in Baltimore County. PERSON AL PROPERTY:
TEV, £2,539.16.0 current money (including 42
slaves, 4 servants, plate valued at £31.3.0, and
books); FB, £2,408.10.5 current money. LAND.

probably on October 28, in either 1702, 1703, or
1704, in Baltimore County; eldest son. NATIVE:
third generation. RESIDED: near Swan Creek,
Baltimore County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
Aquila Paca (ca. 1676-1721). MOTHER: Martha
Phillips (?-1746). UNCLE: James Phillips (?-1720).

HALF UNCLE: John Halli (ca. 1658-1737). AUNT:
