married Charles Carroll, Barrister (1723-1783).
MARRIED shortly after March 10, 1770, Ann (?-
1813), daughter of Richard Lloyd (ca. 1717-1786)
and first wife Ann Crouch. Ann was the step-
daughter of Elizabeth (last name unknown) and
the granddaughter of Edward Lloyd (1670- 1718/
19). She was the niece of Edward Lloyd (1711-
1770). Her brothers were Charles (?-1768); James
Lloyd (ca. 1756-1830). Her first cousins were
Elizabeth Lloyd (1741/42-?), who married John
Cadwalader (1741/42-1786); Edward Lloyd (1744-
1796); and Marian Anderson, who married James
Hindman (1741-1830). CHILDREN. SONS: included
Jeremiah (1772-1841), who married in 1818 Eliz-
abeth Hackett (1795-1864). DAUGHTERS: in-
cluded Anna Maria Lloyd. PRIVATE CAREER. ED-
UCATION-, literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:
Anglican, appointed to represent Chester Parish
at the General Convention of Protestant Epis-
copal churches at Chestertown, 1787. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., by 1770; Esq., by
1787; subscribed £15.0.0 to Washington College,
ca. 1783. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; called
farmer, 1805. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERV-
ICE. Lower House, Kent County, 1787-1788
(Claims 2). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Kent County,
appointed 1774, 1777, 1787-1789, 1791-1794;
justice, Orphans' Court, Kent County, 1787-1789;
judge, Court of Appeals for Tax Assessments,
Kent County, appointed 1786; Chester Parish
Vestry, Kent County, 1788-1790. MILITARY
SERVICE: quartermaster, Thirteenth Battalion,
Kent County Militia, commissioned May 8, 1777.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY:

assessed value £1,335.10.0 (including 27 slaves
and 210 oz. plate) in Kent, Queen Anne's, and
Talbot counties, 1783; 7 slaves, Kent County, 1790.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 1,386 acres in Tal-
bot and Kent counties (ca. 536 acres in Talbot
County inherited from father and brother James;
50 acres in Talbot County received as gift from
mother; ca. 800 acres in Kent County received as
gift from father-in-law and entailed to Nichols's
male children). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND

BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: purchased

2 lots in Chestertown, 1789; sold 266 acres in
Talbot County in 1794 and his remaining Talbot
County land in 1795; sold 1 lot in Chestertown
in 1795 and purchased ca. 288 acres in Kent County
in 1796; sold his remaining lot in Chestertown in
1802 and all except 2 acres of the land he had
purchsed in Kent County, 1805. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: between October 9 and December 2, 1806,

in Kent County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: requested
no inventory or accounting of estate. LAND: 2
acres on which was sited a "fishery," plus ca. 800
acres entailed to his son, Kent County.

NICHOLLS (NICHOLS, NICKOLLS), JOHN
RAYMOND (1756-ca. 1802). BORN: on April 10,
1756, in Prince George's Parish, probably Fred-
erick County; elder son. NATIVE: at least third
generation. RESIDED: in Frederick (became part
of Montgomery) County, until probably 1776;
Germantown, Montgomery County, by at least
1782; moved to Mason County, Kentucky, be-
tween 1787 and 1797. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: Simon Nicholls, planter; clerk of Fred-
erick County (Lower District), 1776; coroner,
Montgomery County, 1777-1779 ; sheriff, Mont-
gomery County, 1777-at least 1780; tax collector.
Montgomery County, 1782; probable son of Si-
mon Nichols and wife Sarah Barton, widow of
Maj. William Barton. ADDITIONAL COMMENT: At
the end of 1782, Simon owed an outstanding bal-
ance of £7,865.15.7 to the treasury from his job
as tax collector. He was accused of purposely
withholding the money and planning to leave the
state with the money. In the Court of Chancery
Simon claimed he had turned over all of the money
he collected and denied he planned to leave the
state before paying what was due or indemnifying
his securities. Several prominent citizens posted
bond to keep him out of prison and to ensure his
remaining in the state until his promises were
kept. MOTHER: Ann (1737-1750), daughter of John
Haymond and wife Margaret. BROTHER: Thomas
(1758-ca. 1805). MARRIED first, in November 1785,
Cassandra, daughter of John Wilcoxon, Sr. (?-
by 1800). MARRIED second, possibly Hepiah.
CHILDREN. SON. probably Thomas. DAUGHTERS:
probably Delilah Thrailkill; Mary Proctor; and
Sarah Thrailkill. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION:
literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, Prince
George's Parish, Montgomery County. OCCU-
PATIONAL PROFILE: in the harness business while
living in Germantown; after his move to Ken-
tucky, he farmed and engaged in distilling. PUBLIC

CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,

Montgomery County, 1786-1787. LOCAL OFFICE:
sheriff, Montgomery County, 1782-at least 1785.
MILITARY SERVICE: 2nd lieutenant, probably in a
Frederick County unit, commissioned July 4, 1776;
captain of a Select Company of Militia, Mont-
gomery County, commissioned April 13, 1781.
