NIC BIOGRAPHIES

Peter's Parish, Talbot County. Her brother was
Joseph (?-ca. 1722). Her sisters were Febia (?-
ca. 1722); Elizabeth, who married first, in 1722,
William Needles (ca. 1697-ca. 1726), and second,
in 1726, Adam Brown. MARRIED second, on De-
cember 18, 1723, Elizabeth (ca. 1701-1755),
daughter of William Thomas (1669-1740) and
wife Jean Riddell (1671-?). Her brothers were
Nicholas (ca. 1695-1716); Edward (ca. 1697-
1716); William Thomas (1705-1767); and Tristam
(ca. 1709-1769). Her sisters were Juliana (ca.
1691/92-1702); Katherine (1693-?); Anne (ca.
1698/99-?), who married first, Loftus Bowdle (?-
1723), and second, William Martin, Jr.; Jane (ca.
1700-by 1740), who married Thomas Martin;
Sarah (1703-1708); and Juliana (ca. 1707-?), who
married first, William Stevens (?-ca. 1733), and
second, Thomas Stevens (1710-ca. 1782). Her
nephews were John Stevens (ca. 1735-1794); John
Allen Thomas (1734-ca. 1797); and Nicholas
Thomas (?-ca. 1784). CHILDREN. SONS: John (ca.
1725-1752), the captain of a sloop in the West
Indies trade who drowned in the Sassafras River
in Cecil County; William (ca. 1727-?); Edward
(?-1772), who married first, by 1752, Elizabeth,
and second, Anne; Thomas (?-by 1755); and
William (ca. 1743-?). DAUGHTERS: Mary (1724-
by 1748), who married ca. 1741 Thomas Powell;
Ann (ca. 1734-1750); Elizabeth (ca. 1736-1774),
who married George Dudley; Juliana (?-ca. 1778),
who married Tristam Bowdle (?-1799); and Jane
(?-1805). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican; owned pews
in St. Peter's Parish Church from at least 1730
until his death; subscribed at least 500 pounds of
tobacco towards the building of a new addition
to the church in ca. 1752; mother's family was
Quaker. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent.,
by 1731. OCCUPATION AL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC

CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,

Talbot County, 1732-1734, 1734/35-1737. LO-
CAL OFFICES: churchwarden, St. Peter's Parish,
Talbot County, 1719; St. Peter's Parish Vestry,
Talbot County, 1727-1730, 1735-1738; justice.
Talbot County, 1739-1749 (quorum 1746-at least

1747). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: received seven years' use of a cider works
from his father, 1723; paid £9.11.8 in debts owed
by his first wife's father's estate, and probably
snared in his final balance of £195.7.0, 1723. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION: 813 acres in Talbot County
(669 acres was his mother's land confirmed to him
by his father's will. 1723; 140 acres acquired by

exchange; 4 acres by purchase). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND

DEATH: purchased 19 acres in Talbot County in
1736, and 50 acres in Dorchester County in 1742.
Controlled 50 acres in Talbot County for the heirs
of his sister from at least 1738 to 1751. Patented
60 acres in Dorchester County in 1740, and gained
an additional 150 acres by resurveying that tract
in 1751. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on January 15,
1751/52, in Talbot County. PERSONAL PROPERTY:
TEV, £725.6.9 current money (including 8 serv-
ants, 10 slaves, silver valued at £13.0.0, old books
valued at 30 shillings, and a "large still worm and
tubb" valued at £15.0.0); FB, £534.9.9 current
money. LAND: 1,092 acres in Talbot and Dor-
chester counties.

NICHOLS (NICOLS), JEREMIAH (1748-1806)
BORN: on July 28, 1748, in Talbot county; third
son. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: in Talbot
County until at least 1770; Kent County by 1779-
death (probably moved to Kent County after his
marriage; lived in Chestertown, Kent County, by
1787 until at least 1795). FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: Jeremiah Nichols (1713-1753), sheriff
of Talbot County, 1739-1742, deputy commis-
sary of Talbot County, by 1749-by 1753; son of
Rev. Henry Nicols (1678-ca. 1749), who was the
rector of St. Michael's Parish, Talbot County,
1708-death, and first wife Elizabeth Gatchell.
MOTHER: Deborah (ca. 1719-1786), daughter of
James Lloyd (1679/80-1723). UNCLE: Robert Lloyd
(ca. 1712-1770). AUNTS: Henrietta Maria Lloyd
(ca. 1711-1748), who married Samuel Chamber-
laine (1698-1773); Margaret Lloyd (ca. 1714-ca.
1785), who married William Tilghman (1711-1782);
and Anne Lloyd (ca. 1723-1794), who married
Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-1790). BROTHERS:
Henry (ca. 1739-1760); James Lloyd (1742-1767);
Robert Lloyd (1750-1815), who married in 1775
Susannah (1738-?), widow of Thomas Cham-
berlaine (1731-1764), daughter of George Robins
(1697-1742); and Jonathan (1753-1773). SISTER:
Elizabeth (ca. 1745-1747). FIRST COUSINS: Robert
Goldsborough IV (1740-1798); Deborah Lloyd (?-
1810), who married Peregrine Tilghman (ca. 1741-
1807); Henrietta Maria Lloyd (?-1822), who
married William Hayward, Jr. (ca. 1758-1834);
James Lloyd Chamberlaine (1732-1783); Samuel
Chamberlaine (1742-1811); Anne Chamberlaine
(1734-1786), who married Richard Tilghman Earle
(1728/29-1788); Richard Tilghman, Jr. (1740-
