MARRIED in 1709 Margaret, widow of John Free-
man (?-1708) of Annapolis. CHILDREN. DAUGH-
TER: Henrietta Maria (?-1765), who married first,
Samuel Chew (ca. 1704-1736/37), and second, in
1738, Daniel Dulany (1685-1753). PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: literate, probably educated in
England. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant;
mother was a Catholic. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: third generation provincial officeholder;
both grandfathers were councillors, father was
speaker of the Lower House, both brothers were
councillors. Esq., by 1706/7; Hon., by 1707. OC-

Talbot County, 1700 (elected to the 4th session
of the 1697/98-1700 Assembly), 1701-1704
(Elections and Privileges 1,2; Laws 1,5, probably
chairman 5); Upper House, 1711 (appointed by
the 4th session of the 1708B-1711 Assembly),
1712-1714, 1715, 1716-1718, 1719-1721/22, 1722-
1724, 1725-1727, 1728-1731, 1732-1732/33 (died
during the 2nd session of the 1732-1734 Assem-
bly). OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICES: commissary
general of war, 1704; deputy secretary, 1705/6-
1714, 1715-1732/33; justice. Provincial Court,
1707-1711; Council, 1710-1732/33; judge. Land
Office, 1717. LOCAL OFFICE, justice, Talbot
County, 1701-1704/5 (quorum). STANDS ON PUB-
LIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: as deputy secretary under Sir
Thomas Lawrence (ca. 1645-1714), Lloyd en-
countered much hostility from the colonists.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-
TION: probably 3,500 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: on March 19, 1732/33. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: size of estate unknown. LAND: probably
over 8,000 acres in Talbot, Queen Anne's, Cecil,
and Dorchester counties, plus 2 lots in Annapolis,
Anne Arundel County.

LLOYD, RICHARD (ca. 1717-1786). BORN: on
March 19, ca. 1717, in Talbot County; fifth son
of father. NATIVE: fourth generation. RESIDED: in
Kent County by 1744; Chestertown, Kent County,
by 1752; "Parley," Kent County, ca. 1752-death.

FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Edward Lloyd

(1670-1718/19), son of Philemon Lloyd (1646-
1685). STEPFATHER: James Hollyday (1696-1747).
MOTHER: Sarah (1683-1755). UNCLES. Philemon
Uoyd (ca. 1674-1732/33); James Uoyd (1679/80-
1723). AUNTS: Anna Maria Lloyd (1677-1748),

who married Richard Tilghman (1672/73 -1738/
39); Margaret Lloyd (1683-1747), who married
Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca. 1676-1741); Pris-
cilla Covington, who married Robert King (1689-
1755); and Elizabeth Covington, who married
Benjamin Wailes (?-ca. 1728/29). BROTHERS: Ed-
ward (1705-1707); Philemon (1708-1729); Ed-
ward Lloyd (1711-1770); and James (1715-1738).
HALF BROTHERS: James Hollyday (1722-1786);
Henry Hollyday (ca. 1725 -1789). SISTER: Rebecca

ACTIVITIES: Esq., by 1750; fourth generation leg-
islator. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: merchant,
planter. Partner in a mercantile firm with his
brother Edward Lloyd (1711 -1710) and his brother-
in-law William Anderson. Richard acted as ship-
ping agent for the firm's vessels trading with Great
Britain, the West Indies, and New England, and
managed the storehouses in Chestertown in Kent
County, Queenstown in Queen Anne's County,
and Oxford in Talbot County. PUBLIC CAREER.
