LLO BIOGRAPHIES

LLOYD, JAMES (ca. 1756-1830). BORN: ca. 1756,
probably at "Parley," Kent County; only son to
survive childhood. NATIVE: fifth generation. RE-
SIDED: at "Parley" (later "Fairlee"), District 1,
Kent County, until at least 1807. His residence
from ca. 1807 until his death is not clear from the
records; he apparently was either living in some-
one else's household or out of state. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Richard Lloyd (ca. 1717-1786),
son of Edward Lloyd (1670-1718/19). MOTHER.
Anne Crouch. STEPMOTHER: Elizabeth. UNCLE:
Edward Lloyd (1711-1770). BROTHER or HALF
BROTHER: Charles (?-1768). SISTER: Ann (?-
1813), who married Jeremiah Nichols (1748-1806).
FIRST COUSINS: Elizabeth Lloyd (1741/42-?), who
married John Cadwalader (1741/42-1786); Ed-
ward Lloyd (1744-1796); and Marian Anderson,
who married James Hindman (1741-1830). MAR-
RIED shortly after May 20, 1780, his second cou-
sin, Elizabeth, daughter of James Tilghman (1716-
1793) and wife Anne Francis (1727-?). Elizabeth
was the granddaughter of both Richard Tilghman
(1672/73-1738/39) and Tench Francis (1701-1758).
She was the niece of Edward Tilghman (1713-
1785); Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-1790); Wil-
liam Tilghman (1711-1782); Anna Maria Tilgh-
man (1709-1763), who married first, William
Hemsley (1703-1736), and second, Robert Lloyd
(ca. 1712-1770); Henrietta Maria Tilghman, who
married first, George Robins (1697-1742), and
second, William Goldsborough (1709-1760); and
Mary Tilghman (1702-ca. 1736), who married
James Earle, Jr. (ca. 1694-1739). Her brothers
were Tench (1744-1786); Richard (1746-1796);
James Tilghman (ca. 1748-1796), William Tilgh-
man (1756-1827); Philemon (1760-1797); and
Thomas Ringgold (1765-1789). Her sisters were
Anna Maria (?-1817), who married William
Hemsley (1736/37-1812); Mary; and Henrietta
Maria (1763-1796). Her first cousins were Mi-
chaelEarle (1722-1787); JosephEarle (1739- 1777);
Richard Tilghman Earle (1728/29-1788); Richard
Tilghman (1740- 1809); Matthew Tilghman (1760-
1801); James Tilghman (1743-1809); Peregrine
Tilghman (ca. 1741-1807); Anna Maria Earle
( 1725- 1795) , who married Thomas Ringgold ( 1715-
1772); Henrietta Maria Earle (1730-1767), who
married William Hemsley (1736/37-1812); Deb-
orah Lloyd, who married Peregrine Tilghman (ca.
1741-1807); Margaret Tilghman (1742-1817), who
married Charles Carroll, Barrister (1723-1783);
Anna Maria Robins (1723-1806), who married
Henry Holliday (ca. 1725-1789); Margaret Rob-
ins (1734-1808), who married William Hayward

(?-1791); and Henrietta Maria Robins (1736-
1791), who married James Lloyd Chamberlaine

(1732- 1783). CHILDREN. SON: Richard T. (?- 1834),
who died in New York. DAUGHTERS: included
Anna Maria (1782-1808); twins Maria (1784-
1805) , who married William Hemsley (1766- 1825) ,
son of William Hemsley (1736/37-1812), and Eliz-
abeth (1784-1808), who married Philemon Hem-
sley (?-by 1822), son of William Hemsley (1736/
37-1812). These three daughters are buried at
"Cloverfields," Queen Anne's County. PRIVATE
CAREER. EDUCATION: received a classical educa-
tion and then studied law. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: probably Anglican. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: Esq., by 1780; fifth generation legislator.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: From 1807 until his death
in 1830, there is no mention of James Lloyd in
the extant public records of Maryland. His lo-
cation and activities during this period are un-
known. OCCUPATION AL PROFILE, lawyer; planter,
at least until 1807. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE. Lower House, Kent County, 1778
(elected to the 2nd session of the 1777-1778 As-
sembly to fill vacancy), 1778-1779 (Grievances
1), 1781-1782, (Laws to Expire 1; Public Taxes
1), 1782-1783; Senate, Eastern Shore, Term of
1781-1786: 1784 (elected on December 16, 1784,
to fill vacancy; acceptance letter received on De-
cember 31, 1784, but Lloyd did not attend during
this Assembly), 1785 (qualified on December 5,
1785); Lower House, Kent County, 1793, 1795;
Senate, Eastern Shore, Term of 1796-1801: 1796
(did not serve; resigned on December 9, 1796).
OTHER STATE OFFICE: associate justice, 2nd Dis-
trict, appointed January 1791 -resigned October
1793. LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Kent County, 1783-
1787; justice, Orphans' Court, Kent County, 1785-
1787. MILITARY SERVICE: 2nd lieutenant in Capt.
Frisby's Company of Militia, Kent County, ap-
pointed September 11, 1776; major, by ca. 1787;
brigadier general, 6th Brigade, Maryland Militia
(Kent and Queen Anne's counties), 1794-1806.
OUT OF STATE SERVICE: senator, U.S. Congress,
1798-1799 (elected to fill vacancy; seated on Jan-
uary 11, 1798), 1799-1800 (resigned on Decem-
ber 1, 1800). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL

PROPERTY: received as a gift from father 11 slaves,
24 head of cattle, 30 sheep, and 3 horses, 1780;
assessed value at least £495.10.0, including at least
10 slaves, 1783; 41 slaves, 1790; assessed value of
real and personal property $3,330.00 in 1804,
$1,670.00 in 1807. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: none.
