Queen Anne's, and Caroline counties, plus 2 lots
in Annapolis, 1 lot in Bath, Virginia, and a one-
half interest in 5,878 acres in Allegany County.

LLOYD, JAMES (1679/80-1723). BORN: on March
7, 1679/80, in Talbot County; third son. NATIVE:
third generation. RESIDED: in Talbot County.

FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Philemon Lloyd

(1646-1685), son of Edward Lloyd (ca. 1620-16%).
MOTHER: Henrietta Maria Neale (1647-1697),
widow of Richard Bennett (ca. 1639-1667),
daughter of James Neale (ca. 1615-1684). BROTH-
ERS: Edward Lloyd (1670-1718/19); Philemon Lloyd
(ca. 1674-1732/33). HALF BROTHER: Richard
Bennett (1667-1749). SISTERS: Henrietta Maria
(1673-1702); Anna Maria (1677-1748), who
married Richard Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39);
Mary (1680-1690); Alice (1681-1744); Elizabeth
(?-by 1696); Margaret (1683-1747), who mar-
ried Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca. 1676-1741); and
Jane (1685-1690). HALF SISTER: Susannah Maria
Bennett (1666-1714), who married first, John
Darnall (?-1684), and second, Henry Lowe (?-
1717). NEPHEWS: Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-1770);
Edward Lloyd (1711-1770); Richard Lloyd (ca.
1717-1786); William Tilghman (1711-1782); Ed-
ward Tilghman (1713-1785); James Tilghman
(1716-1793); Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-1790);
Henry Lowe (?-1721); and Nicholas Lowe (?-1728).
MARRIED in 1709 Anne (1690-1732), daughter of
Robert Grundy (?-1720), a merchant of Talbot
County, and his first wife Deborah Sprigly (Shri-
gley), who was the widow of Thomas Impey (?-
1687). Anne was the stepdaughter of both Judith
Goldsborough (?-by 1703), widow of Maj. John
Stanley (?-by 1695), and Margaret Matthews,
widow of John Pemberton (?-ca. 1701). Her
stepbrothers included John Pemberton (?-ca.
1701); James Pemberton (1687-1724); Joseph
Pemberton (1690-?); and Benjamin Pemberton
(ca. 1698-1733/34). Her sister was Deborah (?-
1749), who married first, John Pemberton (1685-
1722), and second, John Hawkins (?-1745). Her

half sisters were Sarah Impey; Mary Impey. Anne
also had as stepsiblings the four orphans of Maj.
John Stanley, one of whom was Elizabeth, who
married first, William Allen, and second, Thomas
Robins (1672-1721). Anne's nephew was Grundy
Pemberton (?-1768). Anne Grundy Lloyd sub-
sequently married Edward Fottrell (?-ca. 1742)
of Baltimore County. CHILDREN. SONS: Robert Lloyd
(ca. 1712-1770), who married Anna Maria (1709-
1763), widow of William Hemsley (1703-1736),
daughter of Richard Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39);
James (1716/17-1768), who married first, Eliz-
abeth (1729/30-?), daughter of Peregrine Frisby
(1688-1739), and second, Elizabeth Ward; and
Philemon (1721-?), who died in infancy. DAUGH-
TERS: Henrietta Maria (ca. 1711 - 1748), who mar-
ried Samuel Chamberlaine (1698-1773); Mar-
garet (1714-ca. 1785), who married in 1736 William
Tilghman (1711-1782); Deborah (ca. 1719-1786),
who married in 1739 Jeremiah Nichols (1713-
1753); and Anne (ca. 1723-1794), who married
in 1741 Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-1790). PRI.
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate; probably well
educated. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican;
mother was a Catholic. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: third generation provincial officeholder;
both grandfathers were councillors, father was
speaker of the Lower House, both older brothers
were councillors, and brother Edward was acting
governor, 1709-1713/14; high status on coming
of age. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; mer-
chant, by 1720. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, Talbot County, 1712-
1714, 1716-1718 (Elections 1-3), 1719-1721/22
(Elections 1-5), 1722 (Elections 1; appointed to
the Council during the 1st session of the 1722-
1724 Assembly); Upper House, 1722-1723 (ap-
pointed during the 1st session, died during the
2nd session of the 1722-1724 Assembly). OTHER

PROVINCIAL OFFICE: Council, 1722-1723. LOCAL

OFFICES: justice, Talbot County, 1707-ca. 1722;
justice, Court of Oyer and Terminer, Talbot
County, 1715/16. MILITARY SERVICE: colonel, by

1723. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST

ELECTION: at least 2,400 acres inherited from his
father. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN

FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: inherited C3. 1,900

acres from his father-in-law in 1720. WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED: on September 27, 1723; estate pro-
bated in Talbot County. PERSONAL PROPERTY:

books, and three-eights of the sloop Maryland);
