LEE, GEORGE (1736-1807). BORN: in 1736 in
Prince George's County; one of the younger of
nine sons. NATIVE: second generation. RESIDED:
appears to have resided alternately in Prince
George's and Charles counties. Between 1794 and
1806, however, he lived exclusively in Charles
County, and then moved to the District of Co-
lumbia where he died within a year. His dwelling
plantation in Charles County was "Green's In-
heritance," located in Port Tobacco East Hundred.

FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Philip Lee (ca.

1681-1744). MOTHER: Elizabeth Lawson, widow
of Henry Sewall (?-1722). ADDITIONAL COM-
MENT: Philip's first wife was Sarah (?-1724), widow
of William Dent (ca. 1660-1704), daughter of
Thomas Brooke (ca. 1659-1730/31). BROTHERS.
Corbin Lee (?-1774); Hancock (?-1759); and John.
HALF BROTHERS: Richard Lee (ca. 1707-1787);
Arthur Lee (?-1760); Francis Lee (?-1749); Philip
(?-1739); Thomas (?-1749); Henry Sewall (?-
1780); and Nicholas Lewis Sewell (ca. 1721-1800).
SISTERS: Hannah (ca. 1736-by 1781), who mar-
ried second, Joseph Sprigg (1736-1800); Letitia
(Lettice) (?-1776), who married third, Joseph Sim
(?-1793); Elizabeth; Alice; and Margaret (Peggy).
HALF SISTERS: Ann (ca. 1711-1800); Sarah; and
Eleanor (1710-1759). HALF NEPHEWS: Philip
Thomas Lee (1738-1778); Thomas Sim Lee (1745-
1819); Richard Potts (1753-1808); and Philip
Richard Fendall (?-?). NIECES: Margaret Lee Clark
(?-1745), who married John Rogers (?-1789);
Barbara Bowie (1756-1805), who married sec-
ond Ignatius Taylor (?-1807). HALF NIECES: Sarah
Lettice Lee (?-1761), who married Philip Richard
Fendatt (?-?); Hannah Lee (?-ca. 1763), who
married George Plater (1735-1792); Alice Lee (?-
1789), who married John Weems (1737-1813);
Sarah Eleanor Potts, who married Thomas Gantt,
Jr. (?-1808); Rebecca Potts, who married Ben-
jamin Mackall IV (1745-by 1810); and Sarah Fen-
dall (ca. 1732-1793), who married ca. 1755 Thomas
Contee (ca. 1729-1811). MARRIED by 1760 Chloe
(1743-by 1807), daughter of Samuel Hanson (1716-
1794) and wife Anne Hawkins. Chloe was the
stepdaughter of Anne Brown (1732-ca. 1800),
who was the widow of both Samuel Clagett and
Robert Horner. Chloe was the granddaughter of
Samuel Hanson (ca. 1685-1740) and wife Eliza-
beth Storey Warren (ca. 1688-1764). She was the

niece of Walter Hanson (1711/12-1794); John
Hanson, Jr. (1721-1783); and Charity Hanson
(1724-?), who married second, Arthur Lee (?-
1760). Her brothers were Thomas Hawkins (1750-
1810), who married Rebecca Dulany, daughter
of Walter Dulany (?-1773); Samuel Hanson, of
Samuel(ca. 1752-1830). Her sisters were Mildred
(ca. 1746-by 1793), who married William Baker
(ca. 1749-1812); Sarah Hawkins (1750-1822), who
married Dr. William Beans (1748/49-1828);
Eleanor (?-1796), who married Henry Henley
Chapman (?-1821); Nancy; Anne (?-by 1793);
and Elizabeth. Her first cousin was Jane Contee
Hanson (1747-1781), who married Philip Thomas
(1747-1815). OTHER KINSHIP: Chloe's great-
grandfather was Walter Storey (ca. 1666-1726);
great-uncle, Robert Hanson (ca. 1680-1748).
CHILDREN, at least two daughters, born in 1764
and 1766; he was also a guardian with his brother
John to the two children of his sister Lettice.

PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION, literate. RELIGIOUS

AFFILIATION: Anglican; mother was a convert from
Catholicism. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
Gent., by 1765; Esq., by 1774. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: merchant, 1760; planter. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Conventions, Prince
George's County, 2nd, 1774, 4th, 1775 (elected,
but did not attend), 5th, 1775. OTHER PROVINCIAL
OFFICE: surveyor general of the Western Shore,
1768-1771 (appointed by Lord Baltimore shortly
before August 16, 1768, and took office on No-
vember 28, 1768). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Charles
County, 1764-1766, 1769-1770; justice, Prince
George's County, 1777 (appointed, but did not
qualify), 1779-1780, 1782 (out of the county);
justice, Charles County, 1784-1787, 1788-1791,
1793-1795; sheriff, Charles County, 1771-1772,
1773-1774; King George Parish Vestry, Prince
George's County, 1779; associate justice, 1st Dis-
trict Court, Charles County, 1791-1792. MILI-
TARY SERVICE: rejected a commission as a field
officer of the Lower Battalion, Prince George's
County, 1776. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES:
directed the manumission of many slaves in his
will after they had served specified amounts of

time. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROP

ERTY. 55 slaves, 1776; assessed value £1,132.4.2,
including 19 slaves and 42 oz. plate, 1783; 26
slaves, 1798. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: purchased
and inherited 1,302 acres in Charles, Prince
George's, and Dorchester counties by 1760, sold
it all by 1772; purchased ca. 288 acres in Charles
County in 1764 for a dwelling plantation, but sold
it to his father-in-law one year later, who im-
