21, 1692/93, and granted June 21, 1693, in Ac-
comack County, Virginia. LAND: over 3,600 acres
in Maryland and extensive acreage in Virginia.

JENIFER (JENIFER), DANIEL (by 1729-1795)
BORN: by 1729 in Charles County. NATIVE: fourth
generation. RESIDED: in Port Tobacco, Charles
County, by 1778. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
Dr. Daniel Jenifer (?-ca. 1729), chirurgeon, of
Charles County, the son of Daniel of St. Thomas
Jenifer (1672-1730), Gent., of St. Mary's County.
STEPFATHERS: John Theobalds; Robert Whythill.
MOTHER: Elizabeth Mason, widow of John Rog-
ers (?-1717), daughter of Robert Mason (1653-
1700) of St. Mary's County and wife Susanna (?-
ca. 1716). UNCLE: Matthew Mason (ca. 1689-ca.
1728/29). BROTHER: Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer
(1723-1790). HALF BROTHERS: Richard Rogers;
John Rogers; and Rockham Rogers. SISTERS: Betty
(?-1791), who married by 1116 John Eden (ca.
1728-1775); Elizabeth (?-by 1778), who married
Col. David Stone (1709-1773); Ann, who mar-
ried Josias Adams; and Mary, who married by
1734 Robert Christie of London, England. NEPH-
EWS John Hoskins Stone (1750-1804); Michael
Jenifer Stone (1747-1812); and Thomas Stone
(1743-1787). OTHER KINSHIP: stepgrandmother,
Elizabeth Ashcom (?-ca. 1734); great-grand-
father. Daniel Jenifer (ca. 1637-ca. 1692); great-
uncles. John Osborne (?-1687) and William Whit-
tington (ca. 1650-1720). MARRIED first, Elizabeth
(1732-1757), daughter of Walter Hanson. MAR.
RIED second, Mary, possibly the widow of John
Briscoe. Mary was the daughter of Robert Hanson
(ca. 1680-1748) and his third wife Dorothy White,
who was the widow of John Parry (?-1719). Mary
was the stepdaughter of first, Violetta Harrison,
who was the widow of William Hoskins, and sec-
ond. Anne, who was the widow of Robert Ma-
conchie. She was the niece of Samuel Hanson (ca.
1685-1740). Her brother was Benjamin. Her sis-
ter was Dorothy (1721-1752), who married Rich-
ard Harrison (?-1780). Her stepsister was Eliz-
abeth Hoskins, who married Walter Hanson (171 1/
12- 1794). Her first cousins were Samuel Hanson
(1716-1794); Walter Hanson (1711/12-1794);
Charity Hanson (1724-?), who married second,
Arthur Lee (?- 1760); and John Hanson, Jr. (1721-
1783). Her nephew was William Harrison (?-1789).
ADDITIONAL COMMENT: Mary Hanson's father
married five times. Prior to marrying Mary's
mother, he married first, Benedicta, probably the
daughter of Philip Hoskins (ca. 1650-1718), and

second, ca. 1714, Mary Hoskins (1692-1718),
probably the sister of Benedicta. CHILDREN. SONS:
Dr. Walter Hanson (1751-1785); Dr. Daniel
(1756-1809), who married Sarah (last name un-
known) (?-1800); Daniel of St. Thomas, who
married Jane Forbes; and Warren Dent (ca. 1778-

?). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELI-
GIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. His great-grand-
father, Daniel Jenifer (ca. 1637-ca. 1692), is
thought to have been Roman Catholic. SOCIAL

STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Esq., by 1763. OCCU-
PATIONAL PROFILE: merchant, at least from 1763
to 1765; owned a tavern in Port Tobacco, which
he sold on June 26, 1777; planter. PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Conventions, Charles
County, 1st, 1774, 2nd-3rd, 1774, 4th, 1775, 5th,
1775; Lower House, Charles County, 1780 (elected
to the 1780-1781 Assembly but did not attend;
resigned during the 1st session); 1781-1782
(Manufactories 2; Laws to Expire 2). OTHER STATE
OFFICES: appointed agent for purchasing provi-
sions for the army of the United States, March
25, 1778; assistant intendant of the revenue, 1784,
1785. LOCAL OFFICES: deputy commissary, Charles
County, 1751-1767, 1773-1776; justice, Charles
County, 1756-1762, 1766-1789 (quorum, at least
1766-1789); sheriff, Charles County, 1762-1765;
justice, Court of Oyer, Terminer, and Gaol De-
livery, appointed May 27, 1773; justice, Orphans'
Court, Charles County, 1777-1784; 1787-1789;
judge, Court of Appeals, appointed under the
Act to Procure Troops for the American Army,
appointed May 20, 1778; register of wills for
Charles County, appointed September 14, 1779,
resigned October 7, 1780; commissary for pur-
chases, Charles County, appointed July 8, 1780;
commissioner for loans, Charles County, ap-
pointed September 6, 1780; commissary for cloth-
ing, appointed May 1781; commissary for horses,
appointed May 1781. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
PERSON AL PROPERTY: assessed value £877.2.6, in-
cluding 19 slaves, 1783; 22 slaves, 1790. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: 1,746 acres in Charles County,
plus 1 lot in Port Tobacco, Charles County (in-
herited 257 acres from his father, which was in-
creased to 324 acres by resurvey; 250 acres through
his marriage; 260 acres by foreclosing on a mort-
gage that he held; 910 acres by personal acqui-
sition). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN
FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: probably acquired
an additional 540 acres in Charles County by 1783.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on May 4,
