BIOGRAPHIES HEM

William Hemsley (ca. 1634-1685), who immi-
grated in 1658 from Yorkshire, England, with his
wife and daughter. He was a Catholic, whose oc-
cupations included those of merchant, doctor, and
planter. He served as sheriff of Kent County in
1663, clerk of Talbot County from 1668 to 1674,
and justice of Talbot County from 1681 to 1685.
During his lifetime he patented ca. 5,000 acres in
Maryland. MOTHER: Judith (ca. 1633-?). BROTH-
ERS: Charles (1665-1698/99); Philemon Hemsley
(1670-1719); and Vincent (1672-1729), the sheriff
of Talbot County in 1702. SISTERS: Penelope
(1657-?); Judith. MARRIED first, by 1685/86
Cornelia, widow of Robert Noble (?-1684). MAR-
RIED second, Jane. CHILDREN. SON: William (?-
1699). STEPSON: Robert Noble. DAUGHTER:
Elizabeth. STEPDAUGHTER: Frances Noble, who
married Philemon Hemsley (1670-1719). PRIVATE
CAREER. EDUCATION: literate; possibly educated in
England. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant;
converted from Roman Catholicism by 1693. SO-
CIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., by 1685/86.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: lawyer, admitted to the
following courts: Provincial Court in 1695/96;
Kent County in 1696. Planter, PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Talbot
County, 1696-1697 (elected to the 5th session;
Laws 5), 1697/98-1698 (Laws 1; died before the
3rd session). LOCAL OFFICES, deputy commissary,
Talbot County, 1685; justice, Talbot County,
1695/96-1699 (quorum, 1697-1699). STANDS ON
PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: opposed the revolution of
Protestant Associators in 1689; a political oppo-
nent of Thomas Lawrence, secretary of the Prov-
ince, who blocked Hemsley's appointment as clerk
of Talbot County in 1693. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: over 3,500 acres.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on May

HEMSLEY (HAMSLEY, HANSLEY, HEMES-
LEY, HEMSELY, HENESLEY, HENSLEY),
WILLIAM (1703-1736). BORN: in 1703; only son.
NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: at "Clover-
fields," near Queenstown, Queen Anne's County.
FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Philemon Hems-
ley (1670-1719). MOTHER: Frances Noble. STEP-
MOTHER: Mary Townley, widow of John Contee
(?-1708). UNCLE William Hemsley (1661/62-
1699). SISTER: Anne. MARRIED on December 9,
1725, Anna Maria (1709-1763), daughter of Rich-
ard Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39); granddaughter
of Philemon Lloyd (1646-1685); niece of Edward

Lloyd (1670-1718/19), Philemon Lloyd (ca. 1674-
1732/33), James Lloyd (1679/80-1723), Rebecca
Tilghman (?-1725), who married Simon Wilmer
(ca. 1656-1699), and Margaret Lloyd (1683-
1747), who married Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca.
1676-1741); half niece of Susanna Bennett (1666-
1714), who married first, John Darnall (?-1684),
and second, Henry Lowe (?-1717). Anna Maria
Hemsley subsequently married Robert Lloyd (ca.
1712-1770). Her brothers were Philemon (1704-
ca. 1724); Richard (1705-1768); William Tilgh-
man (171 1-1782); Edward Tilghman (1713-1786);
James Tilghman (1716-1793); and Matthew Tilgh-
man (1717/18-1790). Her sisters were Mary
(1702-ca. 1736), who married James Earle, Jr. (ca.
1694-1739); Henrietta Maria (1707-1771), who
married first, George Robins (1697- 1742), and sec-
ond, William Goldsborough ( 1709- 1760). Her first
cousins were Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca. 1676-
1741); Lambert Wilmer (1682-1732); Simon
Wilmer (1686-1737); Edward Lloyd (1711-1770);
Richard Lloyd (1717-1786); Robert Lloyd (ca.
1712-1770); Henrietta Maria Lloyd Chew (?-
1765), who married second, Daniel Dulany (1685-
1753); Henrietta Maria Lloyd (ca. 1711-1748),
who married Samuel Chamberlaine (1698-1773);
Margaret Lloyd (1714-ca. 1785), who married
William Tilghman (1711-1782); and Anne Lloyd
(ca. 1723-1794), who married Matthew Tilghman
(1717/18-1790). Her nephews were Michael Earle
(1722-1787); Richard Tilghman Earle (1728/29-
1788); Richard Tilghman (1740-1809); Matthew
Tilghman (1760-ca. 1801); James Tilghman
(1743-1809); Peregrine Tilghman (ca. 1741-1807);
James Tilghman, Jr.(ca. 1748-1796); and Will/am
Tilghman (1756-1827). Her nieces were Anna
Maria Earle (1725-1795), who married Thomas
Ringgold (1715-1772); Henrietta Maria Earle
(1730-1767), who married William Hemsley
(1736/37-1812); Margaret Tilghman (1742-1817),
who married Charles Carroll, Barrister (1723-
1783); Anna Maria Tilghman, who married Wil-
liam Hemsley (1736/37-1812); Elizabeth Tilgh-
man, who married James Lloyd (1745-1820);
Anna Maria Robins (1732-1806), who married
Henry Hollyday (ca. 1725-1789); Margaret Robins
(1734-1808), who married William Hayward (?-
1791); and Henrietta Maria Robins (1736-1791),
who married James Lloyd Chamberlaine (1732-
1783). CHILDREN. SONS: Philemon (1728-1752),
who died of smallpox in London, England, where
he was studying law at the Middle Temple, never
married; Richard (?-died young); and William
Hemsley (1736/37-1812). DAUGHTERS: Anna Ma-
