SIDED: in Somerset County; Dorchester County at
the time of his death. MARRIED Katherine, widow
of George Johnson (1627-1681). CHILDREN. SON:
Nathaniel. DAUGHTER: Martha, who married
Joshua Kennerly. STEPDAUGHTER: Katherine, who
married John Goddin (?-1712/13). PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Quaker; as a "traveling Friend," he did ex-
tensive missionary work in several English
colonies. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: first
appeared in the Chesapeake area in the 1670s. OC-
CUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; merchant. PUBLIC

CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,

Somerset County, 1692 (disqualified, because as a
Quaker would not subscribe to the required
oaths). LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Somerset County,
1685. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: 500 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH.

DIED: between May 4 and June 15, 1710, at the
home of his son-in-law, Joshua Kennerly. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £439.7.5 sterling (includ-
ing 6 slaves and a part interest in a sloop); FB,
£255.7.10. LAND: 1,350 acres, plus land in St.
Dunstan's Parish, Kent, England and a house in
Philadelphia. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: left be-
quests of land and money to Quakers in Maryland
and England.

EWEN (EWENS, OWENS, OWINGS), RICH-
ARD (?-1660). BORN: probably in England. IMMI-
GRATED: in 1649 as a free adult with his wife and
four children, probably from Virginia. RESIDED, in
Calvert County; Anne Arundel County by 1659.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: probably the same Rich-
ard E Wen who had 150 acres in Upper Norfolk
County, Virginia in 1638. MARRIED Sophia, who
subsequently married William Burgess (ca. 1622-
1686/87). CHILDREN. SONS: Richard, a justice of
Anne Arundel County from 1663/64 to 1676, the
sheriff of Anne Arundel County from 1665 to
1666, and a lieutenant colonel in 1664; John (?-
1669), a justice of Anne Arundel County from
1668 to 1669, and a lieutenant colonel in 1664,
who married Sarah. DAUGHTERS: Ann; Sophia (?-
1671), who married Richard Wells, son of Richard
Wells (?-1667); Elizabeth, who married first, Rich-
ard Talbot, and second, ca. 1663 William Rich-
ardson (?-1698); Susanna (?-1664/65), who mar-
ried James Billingsley (?-by 1664/65), son of
Francis Billingsley (?-1695). PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:
Protestant; came to Maryland during the Puritan
migration from Virginia; his family had close
Quaker ties. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
brought four others, besides his family, on his ar-

rival in Maryland; no title at the time of his first
appearance in records; Mr., by 1654. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Parliamentary Commission,
1654-1657/58; Assembly, Patuxent (Calvert
County) 1654, 1657 (speaker); Lower House,
Anne Arundel County, 1659/60 (speaker). OTHER
PROVINCIAL OFFICE justice, Provincial Court,
1654-1657/58. LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Anne
Arundel County, 1658 (refused to sit because of
military duties). MILITARY SERVICE: captain,
1654-1657/58; major, 1658. STANDS ON PUBLIC/-
PRIVATE ISSUES: a primary leader in Maryland
under the Bennett-Clai borne commission, 1654-
1657/58; refused to subscribe to an oath because
he viewed it as unlawful, 1657. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: rights tO

1,000 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED in 1660.
LAND: at least 350 acres.

EWEN (EWENS), WILLIAM (ca. 1609-ca.
1675/76). BORN: ca. 1609, probably in England.
IMMIGRATED: in 1651 as a free adult with his wife,
probably from Virginia. RESIDED: in Calvert
County; Anne Arundel County, by 1658. ADDI-
TIONAL COMMENTS: probably the William Ewen,
merchant of James City County, Virginia, who
received 1,400 acres in July 1648 for transporting
himself and twenty-eight others to that colony.
MARRIED Ann. CHILDREN. Probably died without
progeny. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant, with strong
Quaker ties. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
brought four servants with him on his arrival in
Maryland; no title on first appearance in Mary-
land records; Mr., by 1654; no relationship proven
between William and Richard Ewen (?-1660);
public offices limited to jury service after 1658.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Assembly, Patuxent
(Calvert County), 1654; Parliamentary Commis-
sion, 1656/57-1657/58; Assembly, Anne Arundel
County, 1658. OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICES jus-
tice, Provincial Court, 1656/57-1657/58. MILI-
TARY SERVICE: captain, by 1658. STANDS ON PUB-
LIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: his active role under the
Bennett-Clai borne commission may account for
his failure to hold office after the restoration of the
proprietary government. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION at least 363
