Mary's County, by 1638; returned to England, ca.
1639. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Robert
Evelyn, Sr. (ca. 1570-1639), son of George Eve-
lyn, of Wotton, Surrey, England; a member of the
Virginia Company, 1609. MOTHER: Susannah,
daughter of Gregory Young, Esq., of York, En-
gland. BROTHER: Robert Evelyn (?-ca. 1649). MAR-
RIED in 1623 Jane, daughter of Richard Crane, of
Dorset, England. CHILDREN. SONS George (1623-
?); Mount joy (?-by 1662), who married Dorothea,
daughter of Obedience Robins. DAUGHTER:
Rebecca (ca. 1635-1701), who married first, Bar-

tholomew Knipe, and second, Daniel Parke. PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate; entered the
Middle Temple, London, England, 1620. SOCIAL
STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: his family was promi-
nent in colonial activities; probably returned to
England after his father's death to assume owner-
ship of the family estate there. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: agent, Cloberry & Company, 1636 (held
one-sixth interest in the joint-stock venture);

proprietary forces in subduing the forces of Wil-
liam Claiborne(1600-ca. 1677) on Kent Island for
Lord Baltimore, for which he was rewarded with

FIRST ELECTION: 400 acres, which he signed over
to brother Robert Evelyn (?-ca. 1649) in 1638.

BORN: in London, England; probably second son.
IMMIGRATED: ca. 1635 as a free adult, probably
from Virginia. RESIDED: in St. Mary's County; left
Maryland in 1642 or later. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: Robert Evelyn, Sr. (ca. 1570-1639), son
of George Evelyn, of Wotton, Surrey, England; a
member of the Virginia Company in 1609.
MOTHER: Susannah, daughter of Gregory Young,
Esq., of York, England. BROTHER: George Evelyn
(1592/93-?). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: liter-
ate; probably well educated. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: immigrated to Virginia in July 1634
with his uncle Thomas Young as agents of the
crown; called "Lt. Evelin"; he returned to En-
gland in December 1634, but was back in Virginia
by the following May on a "special and very im-
portant service"; Gent, on first appearance in
Maryland records. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: agent
of the crown, 1634-1635; planter. PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Assembly, present
1637/38, special writ 1642A (Laws). MILITARY
SERVICE: captain, 1637-still serving in 1642. OUT
OF COLONY SERVICE: surveyor and councilor, Vir-
ginia, 1636/37. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION: received 400 acres from his
brother George Evelyn (1592/93-?) in 1638.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: ca. 1649, probably in
Virginia or the West Indies; size of estate un-
known.

EVERDEN (EVERNDEN), THOMAS (?-1710).
BORN: probably in Kent, England. IMMIGRATED:
