AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: second generation burgess; first
elected to the Assembly after the death of his
brother Joseph Ennalls (?-1709), but the reason
for his brief legislative tenure is unknown. OCCU-
PATIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-
ISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Dorchester
County, 1712-1714. LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Dor-
chester County, by 1700-1734 (chief justice, ca.
1722-1734). MILITARY SERVICE: captain, by 1702;
major, by 1723; colonel, by 1731-1734. WEALTH
DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: at
least 3 tracts inherited from his father. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: between March 21, 1733/34, and
May 1, 1734. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV and FB
£789.9.12 current money (including 16 slaves and
a parcel of law and divinity books). LAND: 3,570
acres, plus part of a 517-acre tract held in partner-
ship with Jacob Lockerman.

ENNALLS, HENRY (ca. 1741-by 1788). BORN:
ca. 1741 in Dorchester County; younger son. NA-
TIVE fourth generation. RESIDED: in Upper Dis-
trict, Dorchester County. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER Dr. Joseph Ennalls (1709-1756), son of
Henry Ennalls (1675- 1734). MOTHER: Mary (?-ca.
1772), widow of Thomas Haskins (?-1735);
daughter of Covert Lockerman (ca. 1681-1728)
and wife Sarah Woolford. AUNT: Sarah Looker-
man (?-by 1745), who married Joseph Cox Gray
(?-1764). BROTHER Thomas Ennalls (?-by 1783).
HALF BROTHERS: William Haskins (1729-1779),
who married in 1759 Sarah (?-1786), daughter of
Rev. Thomas Airey (1701-1765) and wife
Elizabeth Pitt; Joseph Haskins (1731-?), who mar-
ried in 1759 Sarah, daughter of Thomas Ennalls
(?-1746) and wife Ann Skinner. SISTERS: Mary
(1738-?), who married in 1765 James Sulivane
(1737-?), son of Daniel Sulivane (ca. 1708-by
1783); Margaret (?-by 1795), who married Wil-
liam Maynadier (1747-1795); Rebecca (?-by
1767); and Henrietta. HALF SISTER: Elizabeth
Haskins (1733-1805), who married in 1754 Hall
Caile. FIRST COUSIN: James Murray (?-1784).
NIECE: Sarah Ennalls (1761-1842), who married
Henry Waggaman (1753-1809). OTHER KINSHIP
his second cousin was Henry Ennalls (?-ca. 1 803).
MARRIED by 1775 Ann, a minor in 1753, daughter
of William Smith (?-ca. 1752), of Dorchester
County, and wife Sophia. Her brothers were

1775); William. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION:
literate. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent.,
by 1774. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC
CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,
Dorchester County, 1785. See statement in Identi-
fication Problem section. LOCAL OFFICE: justice,
Dorchester County, 1773. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: assessed value
£1,135.11.8, including 27 slaves and 23 oz. plate,
1783. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 787 acres in
Dorchester County (359 acres inherited from his
father; at least 228 acres by purchase); also had
control over 1,227 acres in Dorchester County for
the heirs of his wife's brother. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: by February 2, 1788, probably in Dorches-
ter County. LAND: 787 acres in Dorchester
County; not known whether he still controlled the
land for Smith's heirs. IDENTIFICATION PROB-
LEMS. There were two men named Henry Ennalls
living in Dorchester County during the term of
legislative service. Both were from prominent fam-
ilies, both had considerable real and personal es-
tates, and both had legislative connections within
their families. There were no identifying character-
istics or titles given in the minutes of the Lower
House for 1785, which might have helped in dis-
covering which man served. Therefore, biographi-
cal sketches are included for both.

ENNALLS, HENRY (?-ca. 1803). BORN: in Dor-
chester County, a minor in 1769; elder son. NA-
TIVE fifth generation. RESIDED: near Cambridge,
Dorchester County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FA-
THER: Henry Ennalls, Jr. (ca. 1723-1760), of Dor-
chester County, son of Thomas Ennalls (?-1746),
of Great Choptank, Dorchester County, and wife
Ann Skinner. Henry Ennalls, Jr., was also known
as Henry Ennalls, Ferry. STEPFATHER: (first name
unknown) Keene. GUARDIAN: his uncle, Joseph
Ennalls (?-by 1797). MOTHER: Mary, daughter of
Thomas Nevett (?-by 1760), of Dorchester
County, a merchant, and wife Sarah Rider (1710-
?); stepdaughter of both William Fishwick and
Robert Darnall; granddaughter of John Rider
(1686-1739/40). BROTHER. Thomas. SISTERS:
Catherine, who married (first name unknown)
Bruff; Mary, who married George Ward; Ann (?-
by 1803), who married Richard Bassett (1745-
1815), of Delaware, a lawyer. Bassett was a mem-
ber of the Delaware Senate in 1782, a member of
the Delaware House of Representatives in 1786, a
U.S. senator from 1789 to 1793, chief justice of the
Court of Common Pleas in Delaware from 1793 to
1799, governor of Delaware from 1799 to 1801,
