who married first, Charles Greenberry (1672-
1713), and second, Charles Hammond ( 1692/93-
1772). BROTHERS. Joshua (1711-by 1784); Green-
bury (1711-?); and Vincent (?-1753). SISTERS: Sa-
rah (?-died young); Venetia (?-died young); Com-
fort (1710-?); Sarah (?-by 1788); and Venetia.
FIRST COUSIN: Ann Hammond (1716-?), who
married second, William Go vane (1716/17-1768).
NEPHEW: Richard Cromwell (1749-1802). MAR-
RIED in 1742 Frances, daughter of John Watkins
(?-1743), of Anne Arundel County, and wife Mary
(?-1768). Her brothers were John; Stephen; and

REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,
Baltimore County, 1757-1758, 1758-1761 (Arms
and Ammunition Cv 1, 1, Cv 2, 2; Public Offices
Cv 3), 1762-1763. LOCAL OFFICES: St. John's Par-
ish Vestry, Baltimore County, in office 1747-1748
(discharged for keeping a "publick house" ) and
1762-1765; justice, Baltimore County, commis-
sioned 1753. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, by 1756.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST

ELECTION: 687 acres in Baltimore and Cecil
counties (27 acres in Cecil County by patent,
1746; 99 acres in Baltimore County by purchase,
1744-1748; 561 acres inherited from John Ham-
mond in 1739, which was part of Dorsey's father's
home plantation which had been sold to Ham-
mond in 1726 probably to keep it from being at-
tached for payment of his father's debts. SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST
ELECTION AND DEATH purchased 204 acres in
Baltimore County and 1 lot in Joppa Town,
Baltimore County; leased 255 acres in Baltimore
County in 1765, of which he relinquished 176
acres in 1773; conveyed 303 acres in Baltimore
County to his son, 1771. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: in 1774 in Baltimore County. PERSONAL
PROPERTY TEV, £1,361.12.8 current money (in-
cluding 15 slaves); FB, £1,067.7.7 (after first ac-
count). Testamentary proceedings mention a large
number of creditors with money due from the es-
tate. LAND: 588 acres in Baltimore and Cecil
counties, and 1 lot in Joppa Town, Baltimore
County, plus probably a lease on 79 acres in
Baltimore County.

DORSEY, JOSHUA (?-1818). BORN in Anne
Arundel County, of age by 1771; younger son.
NATIVE: at least second generation. RESIDED: in
Frederick County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FA-
THER: Capt. Philemon Dorsey (1714-1772), re-
sided in Elkridge, Anne Arundel County, a dis-
trict surveyor, and the son of Joshua Dorsey.
Philemon married first, in 1738/39 Catherine (?-
ca. 1750), daughter of Col. Henry Ridgely.
MOTHER: Rachel. HALF BROTHER: Philemon
(1743/44-?). HALF SISTERS: Ann (1740-1795),
who married John Dorsey (1734-1779); Elizabeth,
