COLEGATE, RICHARD (?-ca. 1721/22). BORN
in England. IMMIGRATED: in 1697 as a free adult,
probably from London, England. RESIDED: in
Baltimore County. MARRIED by 1707 Rebecca,
possibly the daughter of William Harbert(?-1718)
and wife Elinor Pattison (?-1743). She subse-
quently married in 1722 James Powell. CHILDREN.
SONS: Richard; John; Thomas, who married Cas-
sandra Cockey Deye (?-by 1777), sister of Thomas
Cockey Deye (ca. 1728-1807); and Benjamin.
DAUGHTERS: Temperance; Prudence, who married
John Talbott; and Patience, who married William
Buckner. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1710; Gent., by

(Elections and Privileges 1-4; Aggrievances 1;
Laws 2, 3; died before the 5th session). LOCAL
OFFICES: justice, Baltimore County, by 1703-
1721/22; deputy commissary, Baltimore County,
1713; land commissioner, Baltimore County, ap-
pointed 1718. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, by
1706; major, 1716; colonel at death. WEALTH DUR-
ING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: Over

1,300 acres; over 2,500 acres by 1715. WEALTH AT

COLVILL (COLVIL), THOMAS (ca. 1688-
1766). BORN: ca. 1688. IMMIGRATED: after 1708
from London, England. RESIDED: in Cecil County
until ca. 1755; Fairfax County, Virginia, 1755-

1766. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Richard

Colvill, Esq. (1665-?), of London, England, a
member of the Inner Temple. MOTHER: Frances
(1680-?), daughter of Thomas Carter (1634-ca.
1688), alderman of York, England. BROTHER:
John (?-1755), of Fairfax County, Virginia, who
was in considerable debt to his brother Thomas at
the time of his death. MARRIED Frances. CHIL-
DREN. Probably died without progeny. PRIVATE

CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
Gent., 1737. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: merchant;
owned a storehouse in Shrewsbury Parish, Kent
County, 1730. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SER-
VICE: Lower House, Cecil County, 1738 (Bills of
Credit), 1739-1741 (Bills of Credit Cv-3; Laws 1-
3), 1742-1744 (Bills of Credit 1, 2; Laws 1, 2),
1745 (Bills of Credit; Laws), 1750-1751 (elected to
the 2nd session to fill vacancy; Bills of Credit 2,
3). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Cecil County, 1730-at
least 1751 (quorum, 1732-at least 1751); justice,
Court of Oyer and Terminer and Gaol Delivery,
Cecil County, commissioned 1742, 1749, 1750,
and 1752. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, by 1730;
colonel, by 1739. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.

County. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BE-

"Clish," near Alexandria, Virginia; size of estate
