ca. 1634 in Kent, England; first son. IMMIGRATED:
by 1688 as a free adult with his family from Vir-
ginia. RESIDED: in Cecil County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER. William Codd, Esq. (1604-
1653), of Pelicans, Kent, England. MOTHER: Mary
(1613-?), daughter of Sir Warham St. Leger, of
Ulcombe, Kent, England. MARRIED first, (first
name unknown), probably the daughter of Rich-
ard Parrott, of Lancaster County, Virginia. MAR-
RIED second, Anne (?-by 1694), widow of
Theodorick Bland (?-1671); daughter of Richard
Bennett (ca. 1608-1675). Her brother was Richard
Bennett (ca. 1639-1667). Her half brothers were
Nathaniel Utie (ca. 1635-ca. 1675/76); George Utie
(?-1678). Her sister was Elizabeth. MARRIED third,
by 1694 Anne, widow of both Benjamin Randall
and Joseph Wickes (ca. 1620-1692); daughter of
Thomas Hynson (1620-ca. 1667/68). Her brothers
were John Hynson (?-1705); Thomas (?-1679); and
Charles Hynson (1663-1711). Her sister was
Grace. CHILDREN. SONS: James, who inherited
family lands in England; Berkeley, who settled in
Delaware; St. Leger Codd (?-1730), who married in

EDUCATION: literate, attended Gray's Inn, Lon-
don, England, 1656. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: An-
glican. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: in Vir-
ginia and holding high office by 1671; in England
in 1684, when he petitioned the Privy Council for
protection from arrest arising from a suit brought
against him by Sarah Bland; probably settled in
Maryland soon thereafter in the area where the
Bennetts and Uties, relatives of his second wife,
had made their homes; he quickly became a lead-
ing figure in Cecil County. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SER-
VICE: Lower House, Cecil County, 1692
(Aggrievances; dismissed from the 1st session for
his earlier opposition to the Associators' Conven-
tion), 1694-1697, 1701-1704. OTHER PROVINCIAL
OFFICE: justice, Provincial Court, 1694-1697 (quo-
rum; did not serve due to "Infirmities of body" ).

COLONY SERVICE: colonel, Virginia Militia, by
1671; justice, 1677; burgess, elected for both
Northumberland and Lancaster counties, Virginia,

strong opponent of the Protestant Associators'
revolution of 1689; nominated by Lord Baltimore
for appointment to the first royal Council in 1691,
but was not commissioned. WEALTH AT DEATH.

monished by St. Paul's Parish Vestry, Kent
County, in 1728 for seeing a married woman. OC-
