BIOGRAPHIES CAR

gate to the Continental Congress from 1778 to
1779; secretary to John Jay, minister to Spain, ca.
1780; charge d'affaires in Madrid in 1782. He mar-
ried first, (first name unknown) Stirling, daughter
of an Episcopal rector of Queen Anne's County,
and second, Antonia Reynon, of Spain. Unpaid
for years, and his fortune depleted, William died in
Madrid in 1795. His widow and daughter Al-
phonsa came to live near Chestertown, Kent
County, after William's death. SISTER: Elizabeth
Brooke, born before her mother's marriage to Car-
michael and then adopted by him, who married
John Lambert Wilmer (1747-1799). STEPSISTERS
OR HALF SISTERS: Catherine, who married John
Brown (?-1793); Ann; Elizabeth, who married
Samuel Thompson; and Margaret (ca. 1741-1767),
who married Arthur Holt. FIRST COUSINS:
Elizabeth Beall, who married John Bracco (?-
1794); Richard Brooke (1736-1788). MARRIED on
Sunday evening, March 6, 1774, Kitty (also called
Katherine), daughter of Dr. William Murray
(1708-1769), a native of Scotland living in Ches-
tertown, Kent County, and wife Ann. Kitty's
brothers were William, of Anne Arundel County,
a physician; Alexander; and James (ca. 1741-
1819), of Annapolis, a physician, who married in
1773 Sarah Ennalls Maynadier Nevett (1751-
1837). Her sisters were Elizabeth; Ann; and Sarah.

CHILDREN. SON: William (1775-1853). DAUGH-
TERS: Ann, who married in 1798 Henry Hollyday
(1771-1850), son of Henry Hollyday (ca. 1725-
1789); Katherine; Elizabeth (?-by 1820); and Sa-
rah. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELI-
GIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: probably a planter. PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Lower House, Queen An-
ne's County, 1778-1779. LOCAL OFFICES: justice,
Queen Anne's County, commissioned 1777 and
1785; St. Paul's Parish Vestry, Queen Anne's
County, in office 1783 and 1789; judge, Court of
Appeals for Tax Assessment, Queen Anne's
County, appointed 1786. MILITARY SERVICE: cap-
tain, Twentieth Battalion, Queen Anne's County
Militia, 1780-1781. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE
ISSUES: manumitted all of his slaves in his will.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: assessed value £1,455.0.0, including 35
slaves and 24 oz. plate, 1783; 61 slaves, 1798.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: approximately 900
acres in Queen Anne's County (all inherited from
his mother to whom they had been devised by
Richard Bennett, Esq., of Queen Anne's County,
who died in 1749). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN

LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH:
owned a total of 875 acres in Queen Anne's

County, 1783; owned a total of 858 acres in Queen
Anne's County, 1798. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
on February 13, 1824, in Queen Anne's County.
PERSONAL PROPERTY: the administration bond on
his estate was $40,000. LAND: at least 858 acres in
Queen Anne's County.

1691 in Ireland. IMMIGRATED: ca. 1715 as a free
adult. RESIDED: in Annapolis, Anne Arundel
County; traveled to England, 1734-1735. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: Charles Carroll, baron of
Ely-O'Carroll, son of Daniel Carroll. MOTHER:
Clare, daughter of O'Connor Dunn and wife Jane
Bermingham, of Ireland. BROTHER: John. SISTER:
Dorothy. OTHER KINSHIP: a distant cousin of
Charles Carroll, Sr. (1702-1782). MARRIED first,
Dorothy, daughter of Charles Blake (?-1732), of
Talbot County, and wife Henrietta Maria Lloyd
(1673-1702); granddaughter of Philemon Lloyd
(1646-1685); niece of Edward Lloyd (1670-
1718/19), Philemon Lloyd (ca. 1674-1732/33),
James Lloyd (1679/80-1723), Anna Maria Lloyd
(1676-1748), who married Richard Tilghman
(1672/73-1738/39), and Margaret Lloyd (1683-?),
who married Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca. 1676-
1741). Her brothers were John S.; Philemon. Her
sister was Henrietta Maria, who married (first
name unknown) Stringfellow. Her first cousins
were Edward Lloyd (1711-1770); Richard Lloyd
(1717-1786); Henrietta Maria Lloyd (?-1766),
who married second, Daniel Dulany (1685-1753);
Mary Tilghman (1702-1736), who married James
Earle, Jr. (ca. 1694-1739); Henrietta Maria Tilgh-
man (1707-1771), who married first, George Ro-
bins (1697-1742), and second, William Golds-
borough (1709-1760); Anna Maria Tilghman
(1709-1763), who married first, William Hemsley
(1703-1736), and second, Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-
1770); William Tilghman (1711-1782); Edward
Tilghman (1713-1786); James Tilghman (1716-
1793); Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-1790); Anne
Lloyd (1723-1794), who married Matthew Tilgh-
man (1717/18- 1790); Henrietta Maria Lloyd (ca.
1711-1748), who married Samuel Chamberlaine
(1698-1773); Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-1770); and
Margaret Lloyd (1714-ca. 1785), who married
William Tilghman (171 1-1782). MARRIED second,
by 1751 Ann, possibly the daughter of George
Plater and wife Ann Burford Doyne Plater; possi-
bly stepdaughter of John Rousby(1685-1744). Her
brother was possibly George Plater (1695-1755).
