road is so far completed in a workmanlike man-
ner, according to the true intent and meaning
of this act, and if their report be in the affirma-

a license to erect and fix such and so many
toll-gates upon and across the said road as
will be necessary and sufficient to collect the
tolls and duties hereinafter granted to said
company, from all persons traveling on the
same with horses, cattle, wagons, carts and
carriages.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That the said com-
pany having completed the road, or so much
thereof from time to time as aforesaid, it shall
or may be lawful for them to appoint such and
so many toll-gatherers as they shall think pro-
per to collect and receive of and from all and
every person or persons using the said road,
the tolls and rates hereinafter mentioned, and
to stop any person riding, leading or driving
any horse, mule, mares or gelding, cattle,
sheep, hogs, sulky chaise, chair, phaeton, coach,
coaches, cart, wagon, wainsled or other car-
riage of pleasure or burthen from passing
through the said gate until they shall have
paid the same — that is to say, for every space
of ten miles in length of the road the follow-
ing sum of money, and so on, in proportion for
any greater or less distance, that such per-
son or persons shall use the said road for any

viz: for every score of sheep, ten cents; for
every score of hogs, ten cents; for every score
of cattle, twenty cents; for every horse, mule,
mare or gelding which may pass through the
toll-gate, whether led or ridden, or whether
driven, attached to a vehicle of pleasure or of
burden, the sum of two cents for every mile,
and in that proportion for any greater distance
traveled, unless the vehicle drawn shall have
