Chapter 357.


AN ACT providing for the appointment of a commis-


sion to inquire into the expediency and utility of


draining the marshy districts of Maryland and prac-


ticability of cultivating the Eucalyptus tree in the


malarious districts.


WHEREAS it is stated by the secretary of the state


board pf health in his last biennial report, and sub-


stantiated by data apparently correct, that the indus-


trial interests of the state are annually damaged to the


extent of nearly one million dollars by malaria exhaled

land; and whereas it has been proved by experience


in England, Scotland, Holland and France, that pest-


ilential marshes may be rendered not only healthy,


but valuable for agricultural purposes by proper drain-


age; therefore —


SECTION 1, Be it enacted by the General Assembly


of Maryland, That the governor of the state with


the advice and consent of the senate, shall appoint


three persons, two of whom shall be experienced physi-


cians, one from the eastern and one from the western


shore of the state, and one practical business man, who


together with the governor and the secretary of the


state board of health, by virtue of their respective
