land to act as such surety and the County Commissioners
of Worcester County shall pay the premium on said bond.
294. The Sheriff of Worcester County shall receive an
annual salary of eighteen hundred ($1800. 00), payable in
twelve equal monthly installments of one hundred fifty dol-
lars ($150. 00) each on the first day of each month, and the
said Sheriff shall appoint two deputies who shall receive
annual salaries of one thousand and eighty dollars ($1, 080.
00) each payable to them in twelve equal monthly install-
ments of ninety dollars ($90. 00) each on the first day of
each month, all of which said salaries shall be paid by the
County Commissioners of Worcester County. The deputies
shall be so appointed that not more than one shall be resi-
dent of any County Commissioner District nor shall any
deputy be a resident of the Commissioner District of which
the Sheriff is a resident, and the said deputies shall hold
office at the pleasure of the sheriff and may be removed by
said sheriff at any time he may elect. The County Commis-
sioners shall levy annually a sum sufficient for the payment
of the salaries of said Sheriff and of his said deputies and
to pay for the allowances and expenses of said Sheriff to
which he shall be entitled under the provisions of this sub-
title. The said Sheriff and his said deputies shall receive
no other compensation, as expenses, allowances, salary,
fees, costs or otherwise, from the County Commissioners of
Worcester County except as provided in this sub-title.
294A. The Sheriff of Worcester County shall be allowed,
and the County Commissioners of Worcester County shall
be required to pay the sum of forty cents (40c) per day
for boarding and keeping each prisoner committed to his
custody, and it shall be the duty of the Sheriff to keep a
book at the County Jail in which he shall keep a correct
and full statement or schedule of all prisoners committed
to his custody, showing by what authority, the offense
charged, the time when received and the time of discharge,
which statement or schedule, together with all books, pa-
pers and commitments kept by him pertaining to prisoners
in the Jail, shall at all times be open to the inspection of
the County Commissioners, State's Attorney and Grand
Jury, and should the Sheriff neglect or refuse to keep said
book or comply with any of the duties which he is hereby
required to perform, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanor
and subject to indictment, and upon conviction thereof he
shall be fined a sum not exceeding one hundred dollars
($100).
