LAWS OF MARYLAND.

Toll gather-
ers.

Sec. 8. And be it enacted, That the said company
having completed the road, or so much thereof,
from time to time as aforesaid, it shall or may be
lawful for them to appoint such, and so many toll
gatherers as they shall think proper, to collect and
receive of and from all and every person or persons
using the said road, the tolls and rates hereinafter
mentioned, and to stop any person riding, leading
or driving any horse, mares or gelding, cattle,
sheep, hogs, sulky, chaise, chair, pheaton, coach,
coaches, cart, wagon, wainsled or other carriage of
pleasure or burthen from passing through the
said gate until they shall have paid the same, that
is to say, for every space often miles in length of
the road, the following sum of money, and so on
in proportion for any greater or less distance, that
such person or persons shall use the said road for
any greater or less number of sheep, hogs or cattle,
viz: for every score of sheep, ten cents; for every
score of hogs, ten cents; for every score of cattle,

twenty cents; for every horse, mule, mare or
gelding which may pass through the toll gate,
whether led of ridden, or whether driven attached
to a vehicle of pleasure or of burden, the sum of
one cent for every mile, and in that proportion for
any greater distance traveled, unless the vehicle
drawn shall have a tire over three inches and one-
half in width, in which case one-halt the above

Proviso.

rate shall be charged; provided, however, that no
less than one-half cent shall be charged per horse
or mule for passing through said gate.

Equalization.

Sec. 9. And be it enacted, That such vehicle
aforesaid to be drawn by oxen in the whole or
partly by oxen and partly by horses, two oxen
shall be equal to one horse in charging all the
aforesaid tolls, and every mule as equal to one
horse.

Power to pre-
vent travel.

Sec. 10, And be it enacted, That this company
shall have the power to prevent travel on the said
road during the construction of the same.

Banking pri-
vileges pro-
hibited.

Sec. 11. And be it enacted, That nothing in
this act shall be so construed as to authorise said
corporation to issue any note, token; scrip, device
or other evidence of debt to be used as a currency;

Reservation.

and that General Assembly reserves to itself the
right to alter or amend this act of incorporation at
pleasure.
