To the Senate and House of Delegates :

The Joint Committee appointed by your Honor-

able Bodies to draft resolutions expressive of the

abhorrence of this General Assembly of the mur-
What expres-
derous act of the assassin Guiteau in the killing
sive of.
of the President of these United States, and also

expressive of the sympathy of the people of this

State for the bereaved family in their great afflic-

tion, beg leave to report the following:

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland,

That in the death of our honored President, the

late James A. Garfield, the nation has lost one of

her wisest and bravest sons, whose indomitable

genius, stimulated by a laudable ambition and the

patriotic enthusiasm of an American citizen, se-

cured his elevation from the humble walks of

common life by steady promotion until he attained
Loss to nation.
the full enjoyment of the highest honors in the

gift of his countrymen. Known and cheerfully

recognized as a scholar of eminent distinction by

men of learning, admired as a fearless and brave

soldier, and widely esteemed as a pure and wise

statesman, he challenged the enthusiastic admira-

tion of his fellow countrymen, who had with

lively interest watched his firm, steady and on-

ward march to imperishable renown.

Resolved, That the assassination of the late

President was the act of a wretch whose previous

lawless life had made him fit for such, a deed of
Suffer penalty
horror, and who, having been granted an impar-

tial trial, resulting in his conviction by a jury of

his countrymen, should at the time fixed by the

law justly suffer its extreme penalty.
