Mr. Phelps in reference to the taxation of property in this
State

On motion by Mr. Dennis,

The consideration of the order of the day was postponed
until 2 P. M.

The Senate resumed the consideration of the amendment
submitted by Mr. Walsh.

Mr. Suit moved to amend the amendment by striking out
the werds "The Republican" in the first line of the pre-
amble, and insert "A portion of the;" and the words "in
the Republican" in the third Resolution, and insert "by a
portion of the."

The amendment was accepted by Mr. Walsh.
Pending the consideration of the amendment,

The hour of two having arrived, the Senate proceeded to
the consideration of the order of the day, being the orders
submitted by Mr. Phelps in reference to the taxation of prop-
erty in this State.

On motion by Mr, Lee,

The consideration of the order of the day was suspended to
enable him to submit the following message:

BY THE SENATE,

January 18th, 1876.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

Barnes Compton, Esq., having been elected State Treasurer,
we propose, with the concurrence of your Honorable Body,
that the Presiding Officers of the two houses address to him
a joint letter informing him of his election.

By order,

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,
Secretary.

Which was read, assented to, and sent to the House of
Delegates.

The Hon. Richard G. Holliday, Secretary of State, ap-
peared and delivered a communication from the Executive.

The Senate still having under consideration toe order of
the day,

On motion by Mr. Bannon,
At 3 P. M., the Senate adjourned,
