Gentlemen of the Senate and House of Delegates :

The melancholy duty devolves on me of informing you by
an official communication of the death of the Honorable Rev-
erdy Johnson. This sad event occurred last evening at the
Executive Mansion, from an unaccountable and unwitnessed
accident.

The distinguished abilities of Mr. Johnson as a Jurist
and a Statesman have long made him the pride of his native
State. And on this most sad occasion, the General Assem-
bly of Maryland may deem it proper to pay to his memory
that tribute of respect to which his faithful services to his
State and his country so justly entitle him.

JOHN LEE CARROLL.

Which was read.

On motion by Mr. Walsh, it was

Ordered, That as a testimonial of respect to the memory of
our late venerated and distinguished fellow-citizen, the Hon.
Reverdy Johnson, whose remains are now lying in the Execu-
tive Mansion, that the flag of the State House be displayed at
half-mast, to remain so during the day, and that the Secre-
tary of the Senate have this order carried into immediate ef-
fect.
