FREDERICK GUY, MD,

Feb'y 3rd, 1876
To the Honorable Nicholas Brewer,

My Dear Sir:—The promptitude and unanimity of the
Senate, in passing the Joint Resolution, extending my term
of service, excites emotions I am unable to express.

Such a manifestation of public confidence, from a body of
distinguished men, to the greater part of whom I am person-
ally unknown, and from whom 1 have politically differed, is
an act of magnanimity, and liberality, of rare occurrence,
and worthy of the Patres Conscripti. I am fully aware, that
I am indebted to their generosity, and the kindness of per-
sonal friends, for this unmerited compliment, and can only
hope, my future career will justify their action.

With grateful acknowledgments, and sentiments of high
consideration, to yourself and colleagues,
I am very truly, yours,

RICHD. J. BOWIE.
