Which was read.
Mr. Stewart submitted the following order :
Ordered, That it be entered on the Journal that if Mr.
Hart, of Baltimore City, had been present on the 13th of
January, he would have voted to refer the memorial of J.
Morrison Harris to the Committee on Elections. He was ab-
sent on account of sickness.
Which was adopted.
Mr. Griffith submitted the following order :
Ordered, That for the expedition of business, this House
shall meet at 11 o'clock, A. M., on each and every day of
the session hereafter, except on Mondays, when it shall meet
at 12 o'clock M.
Which was rejected.
Mr. Nail submitted the following order:
WHEREAS, It has been publicly charged through the press
and otherwise, that for a number of years past certain banks
have been in the habit of paying money or giving other valu-
able considerations for the privilege of being made deposi-
tories of the public moneys of the State, and that the money
or other valuable considerations so passed by said banks have
never been accounted for to the State.
Therefore be it ordered, That a Select Committee of ——
members of this House be appointed by the Speaker to make
inquiry and report whether any bank or banks, having any
public moneys of the State on deposit, have within the last
six years paid out any money or given any other valuable
consideration not accounted for to the State, in return for the
benefits accruing from such deposits, and that said committee
shall have power to send for persons, books and papers.
Which was read.
The question recurring upon its adoption,
Mr. Whitelock submitted the following amendment:
Ordered, That the Committee thus appointed be, and are
hereby, instructed to report to this House a law whereby the
State of Maryland sh al receive compensation for the use of
its funds remaining on deposit in backing institutions of the
