420 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 16,
On motion of Mr. Bird, it was
Ordered, That local bill No. 84, relating to Collection of
Taxes in Calvert county, be recommitted to the Select Com-
mittee.
Mr. Waters, of Carroll, submitted the following order :
Ordered, That at 3 o'clock the House take a recess until
8 o'clock, P M., said session to be devoted to the considera-
tion of local bills.
Which was read, and
On motion of Mr. Hoblitzell,
Was laid on the table.
Mr. Lancaster submitted the following order:
Ordered, That WHEREAS, The evils of intemperance are
universally admitted and generally deplored, and anything
which would afford relief to the slightest extent, ought to
command the sympathy and support of all good citizens.
And whereas, A very large number of the people of this
State have petitioned this General Assembly for the passage
of a law to provide a remedy against the aforesaid evil.
And whereas, The said petitions have been referred to
various Committees not properly the custodians of such pa-
pers; therefore—
Be it Ordered, That a Committee of seven members be ap-
pointed by the Speaker, to whom all such papers shall be re-
lerred, who shall consider the same and report by bill or
otherwise, on the petitions aforesaid.
Which was read.
The question recurring upon the adoption of the order,
Mr. Stewart submitted the following amendment :
Amend so as to read, "that all petitions of a local character
on said subject be referred to the delegations respectively,
representing the various counties, and the several Legislative
Districts of Baltimore city, from which such petitions are
sent, and that all petitions of a general character on thissub-
ect, be referred to the Select Committee named in the order."
Pending which,
Mr. Vandiver moved that the whole subject be laid on the
table.
The question then recurring apon sustaining the motion,
Mr. Koons demanded the yeas and nays.
The demand being sustained,
The yeas and nays were called and appeared as follows:
