The House met, and was opened with prayer by the Rev.
Mr. Canter.

The Speaker laid before the House the following commu-
nication from Hon. Barnes Compton, Treasurer of the State.
TREASURER'S OFFICE,
Annapolis, January 25th, 1876.
Gentlemen :
Your favor of the 18th inst., informing me of my elec-
tion by the Legislature, to the position of State Treasurer
for the ensuing two years, was received this morning.
Thanking you, and through you, the Legislature of the
State, for this renewed manifestation of confidence and es-
teem, with the assurance of a firm purpose to administer the
trust with an eye single to the welfare of the commonwealth
of which we are citizens, I accept the office, and shall, at
an early day, proceed to qualify as required by the Consti-
tution and law.
With sentiments of warm personal regard,
I am very respectfully,
BARNES COMPTON.
To Hons. Daniel Fields, President of the Senate, and
Lewis C. Smith, Speaker of the House of Delegates.
