So the motion for the previous question was not sustained.
The question then recurring upon the adoption of the
order,
Mr. Donaldson submitted the following amendment:
Ordered, That the Comptroller of the Treasury be, and he
is hereby, requested to furnish this House, within ten days,
a detailed statement of the sum of $95,443.72 under the title
"special appropriations," and the authority under which
it was expended.
Which was adopted.
The order, as amended, was then adopted,
The Secretary of the Senate delivered the following Mes-
sage :
BY THE SENATE,
January 6, 1876.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:
We have received your Message proposing to open the re-
turns of the election for Governor of Maryland in the hall of
the House of Delegates to-day, at two o'clock, in the pres-
ence of both Houses, in conformity with the requirements of
the Constitution of the State, and concur therein.
By order,
AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,
Secretary.
The Speaker appointed Messrs. Gill, Waters, of Carroll,
and Whitelock, a Committee to wait upon the Senate and
escort them to the House.
At two o'clock; P. M., the Senate of Maryland escorted, by
Messrs. Gill, Waters, of Carroll, and Whitelock, the Com-
mittee appointed by the House, entered the hall of the House
of Delegates, when the returns for five election of Governor
were opened by the Speaker of the House of Delegates, in the
presence of both Houses, in conformity with the provisions
of the Constitution, Article 2, Section 3, and read by the
Clerk.
It was found that the Hon. John Lee Carroll had received
eighty-five thousand four hundred and fifty-four votes, and
that the Hon. J. Morrison Harris bad received seventy-two
thousand five hundred and thirty votes.
