Mr. Sanders, Chairman of a Select Committee, to whom
had been referred
The Senate bill entitled an Act to establish a free bridge
over the Patapsco river between Baltimore eity and Anne
Arundel county, at or near the present site of Light street
bridge,
Reported the same, with proposed amendments.
AMENDMENTS PROPOSED.
Strike out ail after the enacting clause and insert the fol-
lowing:
"That the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, and the
County Commissioners of Anne Arundel county be, ami they
are hereby authorized, empowered and directed, to purchase
the bridge over the Patapsco river, known as "Light street
Bridge," together with the buildings, abutments, and all
other appurtenances thereto belonging or appertaining, and
to keep and maintain the same as a free bridge, at all times,
if the owners thereof will, on or before the first day of Octo-
ber, 1876, agree to sell the same unto the said Mayor and
City Council of Baltimore, and the County Commissioners of
Anne Arundel county, at a price and upon such terms and
conditions as to them may appear fair and reasonable.
Sec. 2. And be it. enacted, That if the Mayor and City
Council of Baltimore, and the County Commissioners of Anne
Arundel county shall not be able by mutual agreement to
purchase said Light street bridge from its owners, ou or be-
fore the first day of October, 1876, as provided in the prece-
ding Section of this Act, then and in that case the said Mayor
and City Council of Baltimore, and the County Commission-
ers of Anne Arundel county, are hereby authorized, empow-
ered and directed, to build a substantial bridge over said
river, or the Southwest branch thereof, from some suitable
point on the Anne Arundel county shore of said river, within
a reasonable distance from the southernmost terminus of said
"Light street bridge," westwardly to a convenient and prac-
ticable point in Baltimore county; and the said Mayor and
City Council of Baltimore, and the County Commissioners of
Anne Arundel county, are hereby authorized and empowered
to acquire by inquisition, purchase or otherwise, all the lands
and materials necessary for the construction of the said bridge
and its abutments, and for necessary roads leading to and
from the same, for the convenience of public travel; and said
bridge when built, shall be maintained and kept in proper
