Brown, Rinehfirt, Lamotte, Waters, of Car'1, Donaldson,
Clark, Dashiell, Gord , Barnard—72.
Mr. Rutledge presented the petition of Wm. Young and
Geo. G. Maynadier, praying compensation for argument of the
mandamus case of Cahen vs. Jarrett, Clerk of the Circuit Court
for Harford county, in the Court of Appeals, testing the Con-
stitutionality of the Act of 1874, chapter 439, known as
Grand Jury Laws.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Claims
Also,
Presented the petition of J. H. Scarff, and others, in re-
gard to tolls on Yorktown Turnpike Company.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Corpo-
rations.
Also,
Presented the petition of Wm. Rodharn, and 50 others, of
Harford county, praying that an amendment may be made to
the Constitution, to allow a poll tax.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on the Ju-
diciary.
The Speaker laid before the House the petition of the
Judges of the Orphans' Court of Washington county, for
the passage of a bill authorizing the Register of Wills of
said county, to transcribe certain books of record.
Which was read and referred to the Washington county
delegation.
Mr. Ward presented the petition of E. S. Riley, Jr., far a
State subscription to a history of the State of Maryland.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on the Li-
brary.
Mr. Ranger preseAted the petition of George W. Bowera,
and others, for Local Option.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Temper-
ance.
Mr. Fenton presented the memorial of certain legal gentle-
men for adoption of "Campbell's System of Indexing" in
Record Office of Baltimore city.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Claims.
On motion of Mr. Waters, of Dorchester, it was
Ordered to be entered on the Journal, That had Messrs.
Smith and Waters, of the Dorchester delegation been pre-
sent when the question of taxing houses of religious worship
was before the House, they would have voted against such
taxation
