the State of Maryland, under sentence or order of any
authorized authority.

389B. The Sheriff of Wicomico County is hereby author-
ized and required to appoint one Deputy Sheriff for said
County who shall be the chief deputy and who shall hold
office for a period of four (4) years, said term to begin and
end with that of the Sheriff unless re-appointed in the same
manner thereafter or unless removed by said Sheriff at any
time he may elect to do so before the expiration thereof.
The said chief deputy shall receive an annual salary of the
sum of not less than Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) to
be paid him in twelve (12) equal monthly installments and
may be increased at any time by the said County Commis-
sioners from county funds.

389C. The Sheriff of Wicomico County is hereby author-
ized, directed and required to serve all process, both civil
and criminal, issuing out of the People's Court for Wicomico
County, as now required by law. He shall perform the
general duties of his office now or hereafter fixed by the
common law and by the provisions of the General Laws of
Maryland or the Local Laws of Wicomico County. The
Sheriff shall have power to require said chief deputy and
any other deputies to do and perform any service incident
to the office of the Sheriff. Nothing herein shall be con-
strued to conflict with the right of the County Commission-
ers for said County to appoint county police, prescribe their
duties, regulate their hours, fix their compensation and regu-
late their activities.

389D. All fees and charges in civil and criminal cases to
which the Sheriff may now be entitled by law, shall hereafter
be collected for and paid to the County Commissioners for
said Wicomico County in the following manner: The Clerk
of the Circuit Court for Wicomico County shall in all crim-
inal cases and in all civil cases, both at law and in equity,
instituted in said Circuit Court, collect all costs taxable in
said cases for the benefit of the said Sheriff and pay over
the same to the County Commissioners of Wicomico County,
together with an itemized statement thereof, quarterly, on
January 1st, April 1st, July 1st and October 1st in each and
every year; and the Clerk of the People's Court for Wicomico
County shall, in all cases, civil and criminal, instituted in
said Court, collect the fees and costs taxable for the benefit
of the Sheriff and pay over the same to the County Commis-
sioners of Wicomico County at the end of each month, to-
gether with an itemized statement thereof.
