appointment of a supervisor of pupil personnel I or super-
visor of pupil personnel II in each county, and in the larger
counties visiting teachers, to fix minimum salaries for
them, and for State aid toward their salaries.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sub-section 2 of Section 142 of Article 77 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1943 Supplement), title 'Pub-
lic Education", sub-title "Chapter 11. County Superintendent
of Schools", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:
142. (2) There shall be appointed in each county and in
Baltimore City one supervisor of pupil personnel I or one
supervisor of pupil personnel II, whose duty it shall be to
study the causes of and work out solutions for irregular school
attendance and pupil maladjustment so that every child may
receive the benefits of education and juvenile delinquency may
be reduced. In each county having under 5,000 pupils enrolled
in school there shall be appointed a supervisor of pupil per-
sonnel I or II; in each county having 5,000 and fewer than
10,000 pupils enrolled in school there shall be appointed a
supervisor of pupil personnel I and a visiting teacher; and for
each additional 5,000 pupils or fraction thereof enrolled, there
shall be appointed an additional visiting teacher, provided
that the appointment of any person as a supervisor of pupil
personnel I, supervisor of pupil presonnel II, and as a visiting
teacher shall be invalid without the written approval of the
State Superintendent of Schools and provided, further, that
no supervisor of pupil personnel I or II, appointed under the
provisions of this section or continued in office under the pro-
visions of this section shall be paid an annual salary of less
than three thousand three hundred dollars ($3,300) per year
for the fifth year of teaching and pupil personnel service;
three thousand four hundred dollars ($3,400) per year for the
sixth year of teaching and pupil personnel service; three thou-
sand five hundred dollars ($3,500) per year for the seventh
year of teaching and pupil personnel service; three thousand
six hundred dollars ($3,600) per year for the eighth year of
teaching and pupil personnel service; three thousand seven
hundred dollars ($3,700) per year for the ninth year of teach-
ing and pupil personnel service; three thousand eight hundred
dollars ($3,800) per year for the tenth year of teaching and
pupil personnel service; three thousand nine hundred dollars
($3,900) per year for the eleventh year of teaching and pupil
personnel service; four thousand dollars ($4,000) per year for
the twelfth year of teaching and pupil personnel service; four
thousand one hundred dollars ($4,100) per year for the
thirteenth year of teaching and pupil personnel service; four
