CHAPTER 563.
(Senate Bill 362)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
4 of Article 66 1/2 of the Code of Public General Laws
(1943 Supp.), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Admin-
istration—Registration—Titling", relating to the Com-
missioner of Motor Vehicles, the term of office and duties.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 4 of Article 66 1/2 of the Code of Public General
Laws (1943 Supp.), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Ad-
ministration—Registration—Titling", be and the same is
hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:
4. (Office of Commissioner of Motor Vehicles Created.)
The Department shall be under the control of a civil execu-
tive officer to be known as the "Commissioner of Motor
Vehicles". The Governor shall appoint by and with the
consent of the Senate a competent person, who shall have
been a registered voter in the State of Maryland for three
consecutive years next preceding the date of his appoint-
ment and who shall be known as the "Commissioner of
Motor Vehicles", and shall devote his time to the duties of
such office. Said Commissioner shall be subject to removal
by the Governor for official misconduct or incompetency as
in the case of other civil officers. Said Commissioner shall
be appointed for four years, and the term of his office shall
commence, except in the year 1947, as of June 1 next ensu-
ing his appointment. The term of the present Commissioner
shall expire on June 30, 1947, and the Governor shall ap-
point a new Commissioner as of July 1, 1947. He shall hold
office until his successor is appointed and qualified. Said
Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall receive such salary as
shall be provided for in the ,State Budget. He shall be
required to give bond in the sum of twenty thousand dollars
($20,000) or such additional sum as the Governor may
require, for the faithful performance of his duties.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1947.
