The President arose and said :
SENATORS:

By a provision of the Constitution the Session of the
Legislature for 1878 expires at 12 o'clock:, P. M., this day.

Before separating I desire to express to you in a few words
the gratification the session has afforded me in forming the
acquaintance and friendship of members of the Senate, which,
I trust, may continue during our lives.

I hope the work performed by this Legislature will be of
value to the State, and meet the expectations and approval
of our constituents. When I accepted the position of your
presiding officer, it was with great misgivings on my part as
to my ability to discharge the dufies of the Chair satisfac-
torily to myself, and so as to meet your approbation. I can
only say I have endeavored to perform those duties without
favor, or political bias, and if at any time, I have failed, it
has been my misfortune, and not my intention.

Your uniform courtesy and leniency has, in a great mea-
sure, aided me in the discharge of my duties as President,
and I trust you will accept for this kindness, my sincere
thanks.

To the officers of the Senate I am particularly obliged for-
their diligent attention to their respective duties.

I now pronounce the Senate adjourned sine die.
