The order was then adopted.

The several officers present were then qualified by taking
the oath prescribed by the Constitution.

On motion by Mr. Sulivane, it was

Ordered, That a committee of three Senators be appointed
by the President of the Senate to select two Chaplains for
this body.

The President appointed as said committee, Messrs. Suli-
vane, Bannon and Hill.

On motion by Mr. Cooper, it was

Ordered, That the Rules of the Senate of 1876 be adopted
for the government of the Senate until otherwise ordered.

Mr. Bannon submitted the following message:

BY THE SENATE,

January 3d, 1878.
Gentlemen of (he House of Delegates:

The Senate has organized by the election of the Hon.
Edward Lloyd as President, and the appointment of Augustus
Gassaway as Secretary. We are now ready to proceed with
the business of the Session, and propose, with the concur-
rence of your Honorable Body, the appointment of a Joint
Committee of three members to wait upon the Governor and
inform him that the Legislature is prepared to receive any
communication he may be pleased to make.

We have appointed on the part of the Senate, Messrs.
Bannon Humphreys and Stump.

By order,

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,

Secretary.

Which was read, assented to and sent to the House of
Delegates.

On motion of Mr. Joyce, it was

Ordered, That the Librarian be authorized to furnish, if in
the Library, to each member of the Senate, a copy of the
Constitution and Code and supplements, to be returned to
the Library at the close of the Session.
