Garrett Counties, and providing for the appointment of an

Inspector for said mines, and to re-enact the same with

amendments.

With the following proposed amendments :
AMENDMENTS PROFOSED.

In title, line 1, strike out all after the words "an Act" and
insert the following :

"To repeal the Act of January Session, eighteen hundred
and seventy-six, Chapter one hundred an seventy-three, en-
titled an Act regulating the working and proper ventilation
of coal mines in Allegany and Garrett Counties, and provid-
ing for the appointment of an inspector for said mines, and
to re-enact the same with amendments.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the Act of January Session, eighteen hundred
and seventy-six, entitled "an Act regulating the working
and proper ventilation of coal mines in Allegany and Garrett
Counties, and providing for the appointment of an inspector for
said mines," be and the same is hereby repealed and re-
dacted, so as to read as follows :

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the Governor shall, by and
with the advice and consent of the Senate, appoint one Mine

Inspector for the counties of Allegany and Garrett, who shall
hold his office for two years from the date of his appointment.
SEC. 3. And be U enacted, That no person shall be eligible
to the office of Mine Inspector until be shall have attained
the age of thirty-five years, and shall possess a competent
knowledge of all the different systems of mining and work-
ing, and properly ventilating coal mines, and the nature and

constituent parts of noxious gases of mines, and of the various
ways of expelling the same from said mines.

SEC. 4. Andbe it enacted, That before entering upon and dis-
charging the duties of his office, said Inspector of Mines shall
take an oath to faithfully discharge the duties hereinafter set
forth, in an impartial manner,and for the faithful performance

of his duties, the said Mine Inspector shall receive a salary

of fifteen hundred dollars per annum, which said salary shall
fee paid out of the State's money by a warrant of the Comp-
troller upon the State Treasurer for the same.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of the

said Mine Inspector to carefully examine all mines that may
be in operation in the Counties of Allegany and Garrett, at
least once in every month, and oftener, if necessary, to see

that every precaution is taken to insure safety to all work-
